Latest updates

Monday, June 21: AMC’s stock opened the week down, with a loss of almost 5% at midday Monday. Since setting a new closing high June 2 above $62, the Reddit-fueled “meme” stock has traded generally between $45 and $55 per share and may have found a range after a second big upswing in 2021.

AMC Entertainment is an entertainment business based in the US. AMC Entertainment shares (AMC) are listed on the NYSE and all prices are listed in US Dollars. Its last market close was $4.55 – an increase of 4.36% over the previous week. AMC Entertainment employs 2,881 staff and has a trailing 12-month revenue of around $4.4 billion.

What’s going on with AMC stock?

Shares of AMC were among the group of so-called meme stocks that skyrocketed in late January as individual investors piled into the stock, forcing hedge funds to scramble to cover their losses on short positions.

Shorting occurs when an investor borrows shares and sells them to others, a position taken when the investor believes the share price is going to decline. The short seller hopes to buy shares back at a lower price to settle the loan, pocketing the difference.

The move in AMC seemed to be driven by the same Reddit chat board that helped drive GameStop and some other heavily shorted stocks higher. All fell back in February but continue to trade heavily.

Since then AMC stock has been volatile, but with a big upswing starting in May. It’s the leading gainer among the group of so-called meme stocks, which are all up substantially so far this year.

Have AMC Entertainment's shares ever split?

AMC Entertainment's shares were split on a 1:10 basis on 23 August 2023 . So if you had owned 10 shares the day before before the split, the next day you'd have owned 1 share. This wouldn't directly have changed the overall worth of your AMC Entertainment shares – just the quantity. However, indirectly, the new 900% higher share price could have impacted the market appetite for AMC Entertainment shares which in turn could have impacted AMC Entertainment's share price.

AMC Entertainment share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, AMC Entertainment's shares have ranged in value from as little as $2.38 up to $7.54. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

AMC.US volatility(beta: 1.99)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NYSE average) beta is 1, while AMC Entertainment's is 1.994. This would suggest that AMC Entertainment's shares are more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent, relatively-speaking, a higher risk (but potentially also market-beating returns).
