Battling and breeding monsters isn’t exclusive to Axie infinity. While the genre of blockchain games is still in its infancy, there are comparable play-to-earn games to check out with similar mechanics to enjoy.
Axie Infinity is a blockchain NFT-based game, built on the Ethereum blockchain. Users can breed and battle axolotl-type monsters called Axies, which are tradable ERC-721 NFTs. There are nine classes of Axies — like Aquatic, Plant and Bug — and their attributes, stats and appearance all vary.
Battling in Axie Infinity requires at least three Axies. Breeding requires two Axies and one Smooth Love Potion (SLP), which are ERC-20 crypto tokens. By winning battles, you can earn SLP tokens. You buy and sell the Axies on NFT marketplaces, either to get more Axies for battling or breeding, or try your hand at selling Axies for profit.
Buying the Axies required to play or breed might not be budget-friendly for everyone. Axies can get pricey — from $100 to $1.1M a pop.
Gemini's strongest point is its Gemini Earn program, which allows users to earn up to 7.4% interest on specified cryptocurrency balances.
Gemini has a wide selection of cryptos available for exchange on the platform. However, some notable entries from the top 20 by market cap are missing, such as Cardano and Solana.

Whether you’re looking for options that require less of an initial investment or you want a few games to play alongside Axie to increase earnings, here are blockchain games with similar features and mechanics.

If you’ve played Axie Infinity, odds are, you’ve heard of CryptoKitties. While it lacks battling, CryptoKitties is a popular cat breeding game with NFTs. It’s one of the first blockchain games and there are an estimated 1.5M users to date.
The NFTs in the game are all cats — cute, cool, fancy, funny. Players take a female Kitty (Dame) and a male Kitty (Sire) and breed them to create new, unique CryptoKitties to sell on the marketplace.
How to get started:
At the time of writing, many Kitties start at 0.005 ETH ($13).

Like collecting and racing? What about collecting and racing NFT chickens? Enter Chicken Derby.
This blockchain game involves collecting NFT chickens and entering them in races. You earn ETH from winning races with your prized poultry.
The NFT chickens have stats and skills that help them win races. If you place in the top three, you earn rewards.
Every chicken has a “perfection” score, from 1% to 100%. A top-tier chicken has a perfect 100% score and a high chance of winning in races against chickens with lower perfection scores. A chicken’s stats, like Heritage, Stock, Perfection, Consistency and Terrain Preference affect their performance in a race.
How to get started:
Chickens listed for sale on OpenSea start around 0.03 ETH (around $76), at the time of writing.

Built on Binance Chain (BSC) and KardiaChain, My DeFi Pet includes collecting, breeding, evolving, battling, trading and socializing 3D NFT pets. There are also NFT items to collect and use.
By participating in game challenges and events, you can earn My Defi Pet tokens (DPET) that can be exchanged. You can also sell the in-game NFTs on secondary marketplaces, or set up your pets for other players to breed. Earn seasonal awards, fight bosses, explore the Kardia Chain or BSC marketplace, or connect with other players through the Library.
There are a variety of options for gameplay, but the main aspects are battling and breeding, so Axie Infinity fans may take a liking to it.
How to get started:
Sort pets by class, rarity, stage and element. Prices for pets vary, but the cheapest NFT pet we saw on the BSC marketplace at a fixed price was listed for 0.0045 BNB (around $1.67), as of March 2022.

Chainmonsters is a play-to-earn massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), built on a blockchain. Players catch Chainmons — Pokémon-like creatures — then train, breed, battle, buy and sell them. There’s 161 unique creatures to collect with varying abilities, strengths and traits, with plans to release more in the future.
Explore a 3D world, gather a team of Chainmons and battle against other players. You can earn while playing by selling your Chainmons on the marketplace. Additionally, it’s completely free to play and purchasing an NFT isn’t required to start playing.
How to get started:
There’s no investment required to play Chainmonsters. In fact, you can play the game just for the fun of it without a crypto wallet. But if you want to open earning opportunities, get a wallet and list your Chainmonsters for sale.
Monsta Infinite originally planned to imitate Axie Infinity in nearly every aspect — only with a lower start cost. It calls itself an MMORPG, but it’s really more like an online trading card game.
The Monsta cards have different abilities, races, classes and rarities. Battle Monstas, complete in-game quests, battle other players and buy and sell NFTs on the market. The game has two tokens: MONI, the governance token that allows holders to participate in the platform’s decision-making. The second is the Stamen Tellus Token (SST), the in-game economy token which is what users earn while playing.
How to get started:
Battling your Monstas means having a team of three — just like Axie Infinity.
In Voxie Tactics, players collect playable NFT characters called Voxies. The gameplay is reminiscent of the traditional RPG turn-based genre. And if “Tactics” sounds familiar, it’s because its namesake is Final Fantasy Tactics.
By playing the game, users earn the in-game currency VOXEL, which can be exchanged. Players can buy and sell collectible Voxies on the marketplace OpenSea or breed them. And, just like Axie Infinity, there are also scholarship programs on offer.
Explore the pixelated world, collect Voxie NFTs and collectible pets and play turn-based combat.
How to get started:
According to our research, the 30-day average price of Voxies is 0.99 ETH ($2,493).
Axie Infinity is a trailblazer in blockchain games with battling and breeding mechanics. We’re already seeing copycats come out, hoping to get in on the hype of blockchain gaming, but whether or not these games stick around remains to be seen.
As with any investment, NFT values can change by the second, so don’t spend more than you’re comfortable losing. And know that earning potential with these games is largely determined by how frequently you play, and often by how much you’re willing to invest.
