Don’t overlook the US Postal Service for international transfers. It offers convenient ways to send money orders to 28 countries and wire transfers throughout Central and South America.

Send small amounts easily with money orders and wire transfers

One-off payments are fairly inexpensive and easy to send with USPS. Should you be sending to one of the 10 countries serviced in Central or South America you can also securely wire funds to a participating bank.

USPS is best for:

  • Small payments. Low maximums, from $500–$1,500 depending on the location and method, and a limited selection of options makes USPS best for smaller transactions.
  • No-rush money orders. Money orders are sent by mail to the recipient.
  • Safety. Both money orders and wire transfers are secure. A lost or stolen money order can be replaced for just $6.45.

How much does it cost to transfer money using USPS?

Fees are fairly straightforward when sending money through USPS:

  • Money orders. $10.25
  • Sure Money purchases up to $750. $14.55
  • Sure Money purchases between $750 and $1,500. $20.75
  • Sure Money refunds. $31.95
  • Sure Money change of recipient. $16.95

Recipients are not charged for wire transfer using Sure Money.

What types of transfers can I make with USPS?

You have two options when it comes to transferring money with USPS:

  • Money orders. Purchase and mail a money order.

What is USPS?

The US Postal Service was established in 1775 and has grown alongside the rest of America. From the first postage stamps issued in 1847 to the free USPS.com iPhone app in 2009, USPS continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the United States.

What other products does USPS offer?

  • Mail services. USPS handles a remarkable 40% of the world’s total mail volume.

  • Passports. USPS accepts passport applications on behalf of the US State Department.

USPS reviews and complaints

Since USPS is a government agency it’s not rated on the Better Business Bureau website, and complaints aren’t accepted for it. TrustPilot accepts reviews, and as of this writing USPS has a rating of “bad” and a TrustScore of 1.2 out of 5 as of October 13, 2020. Complaints tend to focus on delivery and customer service issues.
