How safe is the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class?

The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class hasn’t been evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for safety ratings.

How does the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class compare to other car models?

The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class started production in 2014. The small luxury car is known for its excellent fuel economy, agile handling and long list of standard features. In 2014, there were over 100,000 global sales for the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, making it the best launch that the company had in 20 years.

As for price point, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class ranks right in the middle of our list of the 360 priciest car models to insure.

About this car

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4matic Coupe lists for a starting price of $40,200, and comes equipped with a 2.0-liter, 221-horsepower inline 4-turbo engine. And if high performance is really what you’re after, upgrade to the CLA 45 Coupe trim package with a base price of $55,900. It boasts a hand-crafted AMG 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo backed by 362 horses that completes the zero to 60 sprint in four seconds flat — 2.3 seconds faster than its more modest CLA 250 counterpart.

While this subcompact luxury model is labelled a coupe, it officially classifies as a four-door sedan. Its “coupe” status comes from its high-paneled doors, smaller windows and sharply sloping roof similar to other Mercedes models, like the CLS 450.

It’s a five-seater, but many drivers would be hard-pressed to squeeze three adult passengers in the back with its limited leg space and headroom. But what it lacks in passenger space, it makes up for in cargo: It offers a decent-sized trunk made more spacious when the rear seats are tilted forward — perfect for stowing sports equipment or luggage and supplies for a weekend getaway.

But safety never takes a vacation, and the 2022 CLA-Class is stocked with safety features. You’ll get brake assist with autonomous emergency braking mitigation, lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning, stability control and forward-collision prevention assist.
