Huntington Business Banking Review

A solid banking option for those who live near a branch and prefer in-person banking.

Huntington is a regional bank with branches in eleven states, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wisconsin. For business owners who live in the Midwest and the South, Huntington offers a solid range of business account options.

That said, the yields on Huntington’s savings and money market accounts are on the lower side. Plus, many of its accounts come with maintenance fees unless you meet balance requirements.

Huntington business account offerings

Huntington Bank offers three primary business checking accounts and multiple savings options, including a money market account, certificates of deposit (CDs) and a savings account. You can apply for a savings account, checking account and money market account online, but you’ll need to visit your local Huntington branch to open a business CD.

To verify your business, Huntington will ask you to provide the business formation paperwork as well as documents with the business address, name and tax identification number.

Business Checking 100

Huntington’s Business Checking 100 is a checking account that offers free email and text alerts and general business services such as deposit scans and payroll. There is no monthly fee to maintain the account.

It comes with 100 free transactions and up to $2,500 in free cash deposits every month. Plus, you get a free 120-day trial of Huntington’s bonus service fraud mitigation tool — Reverse Positive Pay — when you open this account.

Note that the transactions that contribute to your monthly transaction limit include debit card purchases, online bill payments, incoming and outgoing ACH transfers as well as checks deposited or processed.

Unlimited Business Checking

The Unlimited Business Checking account lets you make unlimited transactions and includes up to $10,000 in free cash deposits each month. The $20 monthly maintenance fee can be waived if you maintain a total balance of $10,000 across your Huntington business accounts.

Unlimited Plus Business Checking

The Unlimited Plus Business Checking account is designed for businesses that need higher transaction limits. It allows you to make unlimited transactions and up to $25,000 in free cash deposits each month. To avoid the $40 monthly maintenance fee, you’ll need to maintain a combined balance of $50,000 across your Huntington business accounts.

Business Premier Plus Money Market Account

The Business Premier Plus Money Market Account is designed for businesses wanting to earn interest on excess cash.

It has a $10 monthly maintenance fee, but it can be waived if you maintain an average daily account balance of $10,000 or more. There’s no minimum deposit required to open the account, and the 0.05% APY is compounded monthly. You can make online transfers between this account and your Huntington business checking accounts at no extra cost.

Business Premier Savings

Huntington’s Business Premier Savings account comes with a $5 monthly maintenance fee that can be waived if you maintain an average daily account balance of $500 or more. There’s zero minimum opening deposit. The interest rate is variable and gets compounded quarterly. With this savings account, you also get free online transfers between your Huntington business checking accounts.

On the downside, Huntington charges $0.50 per Zelle transaction for its business savings account. And the APY is not great. While your exact rate may vary based on zip codes, expect a 0.01% to 0.02% APY on your balance.

Business CDs

Huntington’s Business CDs offer a guaranteed rate of return for a variety of terms between one and 60 months. The interest is compounded daily and can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually.

You’ll have to visit a local branch to learn more about this savings option or open an account. Additionally, rates may vary by your location, but we’re seeing a 4.00%4% APY for a 5-month term with a deposit between $1,000 to $19,999.99 balance for standard personal CDs, but not rates advertised for business CDs, giving us the impression that rates vary by location.

What we like about Huntington’s business accounts

We appreciate Huntington’s fee-free Business Checking 100 account, the unlimited transaction options for some of its business checking accounts and its strong branch presence across the Midwest.

Account owners can also get access to a fraud mitigation tool and a 24-hour grace feature that gives you more time to deposit to avoid an overdraft fee. All Huntington’s savings options have access to The Hub, which is a hub of digital tools where you can manage revenue and expenses.

Where it falls short

Huntington Bank sets a pretty high bar to waive the monthly maintenance fee on its business accounts, which can be a deal breaker if you’re a small business with a tight budget.

If you can’t meet Huntington’s high account balance requirement, consider other options like the Capital One Business Basic Checking, which allows you to waive its $15 monthly maintenance fee with just an average balance of $2,000. There are also plenty of business accounts with no monthly fees at all, such as the Standard Bluevine plan or the Grasshopper Innovator Business Checking account.

Low APYs and high wire fees

While Huntington offers a solid range of savings options, the yields are very low. If you want to earn more on your idle funds, look into high-yield business savings accounts instead. Another downside worth noting is that Huntington doesn’t partner with national ATM networks like Allpoint or MoneyPass, which means you’re limited to the ATMs Huntington operates in its service area.

And lastly, if you’re a business owner who frequently performs or receives wire transfers, you might want to look elsewhere. Huntington charges you $18 per incoming domestic wire (most banks don’t have a fee for these), and you’ll pay $50 or $80 to send a domestic or international wire.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

Huntington Bank holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and is accredited by the organization. However, the bank received pretty poor customer reviews on both the BBB and Trustpilot sites.

Many of the negative reviews were about unexpected account closures, disappointing customer service and delays in receiving support. It’s also worth noting that there are only a few reviews on Huntington’s Trustpilot page, and most are one- or two-star ratings.
