Our verdict

A no-annual-fee travel card with low intro rates on purchases and balance transfers.

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a simple travel rewards card with a $0 annual fee, 0% foreign transaction fees and a long 0% intro APR period on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months. After the intro period you’ll have an APR on purchases and balance transfers of 19.74% to 29.74% variable. You'll also pay a 3% fee on balance transfers made during the intro period, or 4% fee at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time.

But what makes this card special, is the solid signup bonus of 20,000 miles after you spend $500 on purchases during your first 3 months. As well as the solid 1.25x miles on all purchases. In fact, this aspect of the card just got even better. Now you can earn 5x miles on hotels and rental cards booked through Capital One Travel. And at long last, Capital One has implemented a 1:1 ratio transfer tier to its travel partners, something that has long been a sore spot for the provider.

Thanks to these small additions and the return of the balance transfer offer to the card, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is an excellent low-cost travel card choice.

Pros

  • Intro APR period. Get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months after account opening, then 19.74% to 29.74% variable. You’ll pay a 3% fee for balances transferred in the first 15 months, or 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you at any other time.
  • Unlimited 1.25x miles. You'll earn 1.25x miles on all purchases.
  • Rewards. You'll also earn 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Cons

  • Capital One Travel. If you book your travel outside of Capital One Travel, you'll earn 1.25x miles instead of the accelerated 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

Case study: Anna’s experience

Like most millennials, I avoided credit cards for a long time. But I travel a lot and I wanted a way to avoid foreign transaction fees. With no annual or foreign transaction fees, 15 months promotional APR and 1.25 miles on the dollar, a travel card like VentureOne seemed like a good option.

It took me about five minutes to get approved for a $5,000 limit with a variable APR of 29.74%. It was easier than I’d expected, though I was alarmed that Capital One didn’t make it obvious when it checked my credit. While the miles haven’t exactly netted me a free flight to Europe, every few months I earn enough points to cover a $122 MetroCard. I obsessively pay off my balance as soon as each purchase clears — a habit that got my credit limit bumped up to $7,500 after about six months.
