Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE: TSM) is the beating heart of the semiconductor industry, producing advanced chips for tech giants like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD. These semiconductors are vital to chip makers, and are used in pretty much all of global technology.
It’s extremely difficult to make these precision semiconductors, giving TSMC a wide competitive moat. TSMC technological leadership ensures dominance, but geopolitical risks with China remain a key concern for investors thinking about buying TSMC shares.
March 3, 2025: TSMC announced a $100b investment to build 5 new chip factories in the US. In a joint announcement with President Trump, the contract chipmaker's Chief Executive, C.C. Wei, also said it would create a research and development centre in the US, while Trump hailed the announcement as a win for national security. TSMC stock fell 2% following the news, perhaps in anticipation of higher production costs in the US compared to Taiwan.

Buying shares in just one company is generally considered a riskier bet than investing in a range of investments - AKA a "diversified portfolio". Experts generally recommend holding a mix of investments in specific assets and funds. Funds are ready-made portfolios of multiple companies' shares (potentially including TSMC), and the idea is that drops in the value of one constituent company's share price might be offset by rises in others.
TSMC is a major part of the NYSE, so it's included in many global funds and investment trusts, as well as tracker-style exchange traded funds (ETFs).
