Ways to invest in Chelsea Football Club

Chelsea FC isn't publicly listed, so you can't invest directly in the club - however, there are ways that you can invest indirectly.

Whether you’re a no-matter-the-weather fan, a pub fiend or a glory fan, you might have wondered whether there’s an opportunity to add Chelsea Football Club to your investment portfolio. Sadly, Chelsea FC isn’t publicly listed, so you can’t invest directly in the club. There are, however, ways that you can invest indirectly. Here’s some ways to invest in Chelsea Football Club.

Can you buy Chelsea Football Club shares?

No, unfortunately for keen fans, it’s not possible to buy shares in Chelsea Football Club as it is privately owned. There’s a very limited number of football clubs listed on stock exchanges, including Borussia Dortmund, Celtic and Manchester United.

We’ve suggested some alternative ways to invest in Chelsea Football Club below.

Who has shares in Chelsea Football Club?

Chelsea Football Club is owned by a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital Group and including Hansjörg Wyss and Mark Walter. The acquisition was carried out in May 2022 when it was agreed that Todd Boehly and Clearlake share joint control of the football club. Boehly serves as Chairman.

Is Chelsea Football Club listed on a stock exchange?

Chelsea Football Club is not listed on any stock exchanges and there’s no news on whether the football club is planning an initial public offering (IPO) any time soon, so we believe that the company will remain privately owned for the foreseeable future.

We’ll keep this page updated with any future news of Chelsea FC listing on a stock exchange, if any arises.

Alternative and indirect ways to invest in Chelsea Football Club

The two best ways to invest in Chelsea Football Club while it remains privately owned are to invest in the club’s sponsors and partners and to invest in the company that owns the freehold for the pitch.

Invest in Chelsea FC sponsors and partners

An alternative way to invest in Chelsea Football Club is to invest in some of its sponsors or global partners — these are companies that provide funds directly to the club to pay for the players’ kits, equipment and transport.

Invest in Chelsea Pitch Owners PLC (CPO)

Unusually, the freehold in the ground is owned by a nonprofit organisation called Chelsea Pitch Owners. The organisation also owns the naming rights of the football club. This strange setup came from Chelsea Football Club’s financial difficulties in the 70s and 80s, which resulted in the club chairman, Ken Bates, obtaining the freehold of the club with a loan from the club.

Shares start at £100, but you can buy shares that are framed or signed by players. The important thing to note is that you wouldn’t really expect to earn any returns from the shares as there’s no secondary market for them and dividends are not paid.

Bottom line

As it isn’t a publicly owned company, you can’t buy shares in Chelsea Football Club. Keen fans that still want to invest in companies affiliated with Chelsea Football Club can opt to buy shares in its sponsors or partners. You can buy shares in the freehold of Chelsea’s football pitch, but you couldn’t reasonably expect to get returns from your investment.
