Finder Score for bank accounts
To make comparing even easier we came up with the Finder Score. Fees, features and customer service across 20+ of the most popular banks are all weighted and scaled to produce a score out of 10. The higher the score the better the account – simple.
Read the full methodology"As far as packaged accounts go, the Edge and Edge Up accounts are pretty decent. Both have relatively low fees, and both offer rewards that can easily outweigh the monthly cost of the accounts. What’s more, Santander’s website includes a calculator to help you easily work out whether paying for your account will be cost-effective – something that isn’t always clear-cut with other packaged accounts.
With the Edge account, the maximum cashback you can earn each month on household bills is £10. But to earn that, your household bills would need to total £1,000 a month. If, on the other hand, they totalled £400 a month, you’d earn £4 a month, and this more than covers the £3 monthly fee.
On top of this, you can earn up to a further £10 a month in cashback on supermarket spending and travel costs. This is something you might be able to achieve if you regularly commute by train, for instance. But even if you only earn half of that, say £5 a month, add it to the £4 a month you’ve earned from your household bills and you’re looking at £9 a month. Or £6 a month once you’ve deducted the account fee.
It’s not bad when you consider this works out to be an extra £72 a year (with fees deducted), and all you’re doing is spending as normal.
Further benefits of the Edge account include fee-free spending abroad and access to a highly competitive savings account paying 7.00% AER. So all in all, I think it’s pretty good value, as long as you earn enough in cashback. You’re likely to find it particularly valuable if you open it as a joint account as you’ll only have one monthly fee to pay, but you’ll earn more cashback.
The Edge Up account works in a similar way but has a higher monthly fee of £5. In return, you can earn up to £15 a month in cashback for both household bills and travel spend."
