30 September 2019, London
Personal finance comparison website Finder asked 76 people around the world to find out the cost of Starbucks tall latte, with the results creating the Starbucks Index.
A coffee in London costs £2.90. That’s 29p less than the European average (£3.19) and 27p cheaper than our neighbours in Dublin, Ireland (£3.17).
Similarly, a cup of coffee in the European metropolises of Munich, Paris and Athens exceeds the price of one in London by 66p, 58p and 23p respectively.
The most expensive Starbucks tall latte in the world will set you back £4.91 and can be found in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is over £2 more than it costs in London.
At the other end of the scale, the cheapest coffee in the world can be found in Istanbul, Turkey at just £1.44 for a Starbucks tall latte. This is less than half the price of a coffee in England’s capital. The unofficial home of coffee, Italy (Milan), is also 67p cheaper than London.
Globally, London ranks as the 41st cheapest city out of 76 cities around the world for the cost of a coffee. This is good news for Brits, as it is estimated that 95 million cups of coffee are drunk in the UK every day* and we have over 1,000 Starbucks outlets (compared to just 5 in Italy!)**.
The Index also looks at what a coffee is predicted to cost based upon a country’s GDP. It found that in London, a cup of coffee is 7% cheaper than it should be. Turkey’s residents are getting the cheapest coffee for their GDP, with lattes there costing 44% less than they should. However, the Danes are not so lucky, with their coffee costing 44% more than it’s estimated to be.
