How to apply for a Lloyds Bank credit card

You can apply for a credit card online, by phone, or in-branch. While all options are available, Lloyds suggests applying online for a faster decision making process. Additionally, some card offers are exclusively accessible through the bank’s online platform.

The bank also suggests that when applying you should keep important details to hand such as address, annual income, current bank account details and other credit or store cards you may hold that are not with Lloyds.

If you want to transfer a balance to your new Lloyds credit card, be aware there is a limit to how much you can transfer. With Lloyds, this is up to 93% of your credit limit. So if your credit limit was £2,000, you could transfer up to £1,860.”

Eligibility requirements

Before you apply you should be aware of the basic eligibility requirements. If you don’t match them, your application will likely not be successful. You can do a quick check of your eligibility for a card – it’s free and will not affect your credit score.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old or over.
  • Have a regular income.
  • Be a resident of the United Kingdom.
  • Not currently be declared bankrupt, have any county court judgements or be subject to an individual voluntary agreement.
  • Not have already applied for a card and been declined in the last 30 days.

If you are not approved, Lloyds Bank suggests going to the three credit reference agencies (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) and asking for a copy of your credit report, although this may require a fee. Getting access to your credit report can help you to spot whether something is weighing down your credit score.

Why might you not be approved?

There are various reasons why your application could be rejected. One possibility is that you don’t meet the specific eligibility criteria set by the bank for a particular card. A lack of credit history or a track record of missed or late payments on loans, credit cards or your mortgage, can also work against you when applying for more credit.

How do I make repayments on a Lloyds credit card?

There are a number of ways to make a credit card payment. The easiest method is Direct Debit, which is a payment taken each month from your bank or building society and paid directly into your credit card account. If you are registered for internet banking then you can do this online by logging in and clicking on “Pay credit card” next to your account on the overview page.

If my payment is received after the due date will I be charged?

If your payment is received after the due by date you will be charged a £12 late payment charge.

Can I request an increase or decrease to my credit card limit?

If you are registered for online banking, you can request to increase or decrease your credit limit. Once logged in from ‘My accounts’ select the ‘More actions’ button next to your credit card account, then ‘Manage your credit limit’ and follow the instructions on the screen. Note that if you want a credit limit increase, you might not always get it.
