After acquiring SSE Energy Services in 2020, OVO Energy is now one of the “Big Six” energy providers in the UK, along with British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, Scottish Power and newbie Octopus Energy. Since it launched in 2009, OVO Energy has welcomed over 1 million customers and has planted over 1 million trees.

OVO offers dual fuel tariffs with the option to pick from a range of variable and fixed-rate plans, including its 100% renewable electricity Greener Energy plan or boiler cover plan. In 2019, OVO launched its Plan Zero sustainability initiative which aims to reduce its customers’ bills and carbon footprint using smart tech, become a zero carbon business by 2035 and provide cheaper EV charging and leasing.

Is OVO Energy green?

According to data collected from OVO Energy, the provider’s “fuel mix” was represented by the following sources from 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023. OVO says it offers 100% renewable electricity via its Greener Energy plan.

OVO Energy customer reviews

According to 2023 data from the charity Citizens Advice, OVO Energy saw an average of 142.7 complaints per 10,000 customers escalated to a third party, call centre wait times of over an hour and a half and an overall rating of 2.9 out of 5.

However, customer reviews on the website Trustpilot give OVO Energy 4.2 stars out of 5, based on over 120,000 reviews. 69% of reviewers gave OVO 5 stars citing the provider’s expert and efficient customer service and the convenience of the smart meter readings as reasons for their score.

Pros and cons of OVO Energy

Pros

  • Offers a plan with 100% renewable electricity.
  • Smart technology. OVO sells smart thermostats (at a discount) and home electric vehicle chargers.

Cons

  • Poor customer response times. Data from Citizens Advice shows that customers experienced long wait times when trying to contact an OVO Energy customer service agent in 2023.

Our verdict: Is OVO Energy any good?

The signs are that OVO Energy customers are, broadly speaking, pretty happy with the service they get from their green energy supplier. This is despite slightly disappointing data from Citizens Advice around the time it takes to get a response to customer service enquiries and the proportion of complaints that the firm can’t solve itself.

The firm’s tariffs are usually pretty competitive, if not necessarily always the cheapest. The percentage of renewable energy in OVO’s fuel mix vs fossil fuels has gone down a few percent in the last few years, but with its Plan Zero and Path to Zero initiatives it would appear the company is making strides to curb its carbon footprint.

As a large supplier that offers its customers the ability to manage their accounts, home heating and cheaper EV charging from the palm of their hand, OVO may be a popular choice for tech-savvy households.
