Cover from Sheilas’ Wheels is no longer just for women – everyone’s welcome. But the insurer offers extra benefits for women and parents, like handbag cover and a counselling service. We’ve reviewed Sheilas’ Wheels insurance to show what’s available and the pros and cons of the cover.
Sheilas’ Wheels was founded in 2005 by Sir Peter Wood, who also established Direct Line and esure.
Some of you may remember their early adverts, featuring Australian women with big hair and a barbie-style pink convertible. The company was conceived as a female-centric car insurance provider after research found female motorists typically have different needs from their male counterparts. In 2010, Sheilas’ Wheels launched home insurance and travel insurance and expanded to the broker market in 2011.
Today, Sheilas’ Wheels caters to all motorists, but parents may like benefits such as family-friendly repair garages, and handbag cover is designed to appeal to women.

What are Sheilas’ Wheels different policies?
Sheilas’ Wheels offers just 2 levels of insurance: Third Party Fire and Theft or Comprehensive. If you’re a new driver with a car that is perhaps not worth a whole heap of money, you’ll likely go for third party, fire and theft insurance. For some people, this may be cheaper than comprehensive, but it’s always worth checking as there are so many factors involved, and comprehensive can work out cheaper.
The Sheilas’ Wheels Comprehensive policy has a range of benefits including a courtesy car while your car is being fixed at a recommended garage, windscreen cover and up to £200 of handbag cover if it’s stolen from your car. If you go to Europe you’re covered for 90 days. And you’ll get £100 towards replacing a child car seat after an accident, even if there’s no visible damage.
This covers you if your car is stolen, damaged by fire or by anyone attempting to steal it. It covers any third party, and damage to their property if you’re at fault. Also comes with a 5-year repair guarantee and in-car entertainment cover if any permanently fitted electronic equipment is damaged.
Sheilas’ Wheels does not offer third party cover on its own.
How do I make a claim?
You can make a claim online or by calling call 0345 604 3570 (+44 141 847 0044 if calling from abroad). You’ll need to have your insurance details with you when you make the call.
If you require the 24-hour accident recovery service, 0345 604 3570. If you need the 24-hour windscreen repair helpline, call 0800 032 9082.
What is my excess?
A policy excess is the amount you will have to pay of the total costs incurred from the claim. You can volunteer to have a higher excess to get cheaper insurance, but make sure you can actually afford to pay this if you need to make a claim.
