The Renault Clio is a small family car, produced by the French manufacturer since 1990 and relatively affordable to buy, run and insure. In this guide, we’ll look in detail at car insurance costs for the Clio and how you could save on your premiums.

Average Renault Clio insurance costs

To give you an idea of how much it could cost you to insure your car, we ran a number of quotes to find an average figure. Our results estimated that, on average, you could insure your Renault Clio with a comprehensive policy for the monthly price of £49.59 or a single annual payment of £539.94.

However, this is just an average: your actual premium will depend on a number of factors, including the insurance group the car is in.

Renault Clio insurance groups

Vehicles in the UK are categorised into insurance groups, ranging from 1 (the cheapest) to 50 (the most expensive), which partly determine the cost of your premium.

Renault Clio models range from insurance groups 3 to 28. This means the cost of insurance can vary significantly between various Clio models, although they’re all at the more affordable end of the spectrum. For example, a 30-year-old driver in an average postcode could pay:

  • around £526 for insurance on a Renault Clio Play 1.2 16V 75 5d, which is in insurance group 3
  • or around £743 for an insurance group 28 car like the Renault Clio Sport Trophy Nav TCe 220 EDC auto 5d

That’s a difference of almost £300 to insure the same make of car.

The insurance group a model is placed in depends on a number of factors including the model’s engine size and price.

However, the insurance group isn’t the only factor determining the cost of your car insurance: one of the most important other factors is your age. The younger you are, the more risk you represent to insurers, and the more you’re likely to pay for insurance.

That’s why, in the table below, we show you the cost you’d be likely to pay at a few different ages.

Renault Clio insurance cost by location

The table above shows the average cost of Peugeot 208 insurance based on insurance groups and driver age. However, many other factors affect the cost of your car insurance premiums, and one of the biggest is where you are in the UK. Where you live helps determine the level of risk that your car may be stolen or that you’ll be involved in an accident, and this affects the cost of insurance.

To demonstrate the power of the postcode, here are some average quotes for a 30-year-old living in three different locations. The quotes are for a Renault Clio Play dCi 90 5d.

  • Expensive: £1,190 (London SE1)
  • Average: £688 (Newcastle NE1)
  • Cheap: £540 (Galashiels TD1)

What other factors affect my Renault Clio insurance rate?

We’ve covered the impact of insurance groups, driver age and location. Here are some of the other factors that affect your insurance premium costs:

  • The model of your car, particularly its engine size and capacity
  • The age of your car
  • Annual mileage
  • Your driving history and activity
  • Your car’s safety rating, security and any anti-theft precautions
  • No claims discount
  • Your marital status
  • Your credit history and job

How can I save on insurance premiums for my Renault Clio?

When searching for insurance, you’ll want to find the best deal for a price that’s within your budget. We’ve uncovered some tricks you can try to lower the cost of your premium: take a look below.

  • Limit your car usage (where possible). Occasionally deciding to walk or get public transport, rather than using your car, can help to save on your premiums.
  • Pay annually rather than monthly. It might be scary to part with a large sum in one go, but if you’re able to pay annually you could save an average of £55 a year.
  • Don’t just accept your renewal quote. When it’s time for renewal, it’s worth investing a couple of hours to shop around: there may be cheaper options out there.

Is a Renault Clio cheap to insure?

Danny Butler
Finder insurance expert Danny Butler answers

Let’s say you’re doing everything you can from the list above: you’re driving less, you’re paying annually, you’re shopping around for insurance quotes. Does that mean you’ll find a Clio cheap to insure?

The short answer is yes: all Renault Clio models are at the cheaper end of the insurance price range. However, as we’ve already established, the precise price depends on a number of factors including the model and the insurance group it’s placed in.

One factor affecting insurance groups is engine size. In general, the bigger the engine, the higher the cost of your insurance, because these engines are more expensive to repair or replace. For example, it may cost £526 to insure the 1.2-litre Renault Clio Expression 1.2 16V 75 5d, while you may pay £688 for the 1.5-litre Renault Clio 1.5 dCi (90bhp) Expression+ 5d.

Finally, the safer your car is, the less of a risk it will be for companies to insure, and therefore the lower your premium is likely to be.

How safe is a Renault Clio?

When tested by Euro NCAP in 2019, the Renault Clio was awarded a safety rating of 5/5. It scored 96% for adult occupant safety, 89% for child occupant safety, and 75% for safety assist.

The Clio comes with a great selection of safety features as standard, which will help keep you safer and may help to keep your premiums low. As well as more basic features such as a seat belt reminder, the Clio also comes with ESC, or electronic stability control, to prevent any skidding on the road, Brake Pressure technology to help you make hill starts with no roll back, and Speed Assistance to help you keep to the legal speed limit. It also has the fantastic Active Emergency Braking feature, which helps to reduce your braking distance if you come into contact with a sudden obstacle.

For details about optional, extra safety features, visit the Renault website or a Renault dealership. Ask your insurer about additional safety and/or security features you could install to lower your premiums and keep you and your passengers safe, although bear in mind that as of January 2023 manufacturers may be unable to provide some features due to a worldwide shortage of some components.

The bottom line

There’s a lot to appreciate about the Renault Clio, including the cost of insuring it: follow the tips in this guide to bring your premiums down even further.
