Thatcham Research created the 50 car insurance groups to help insurers offer motorists a reasonable premium based on how much they’d need to pay out to repair a particular car. All vehicles are assigned an insurance group from 1-50, with group 1 having the cheapest and group 50 the most expensive.

The group a particular vehicle fits into is mostly determined by the value of the cars and its parts. However, a car’s safety features and its overall performance are also considered. The car insurance group isn’t the only factors affecting premiums. On top of that, insurers will consider your personal circumstances including: your age, driving history and location.

With that in mind, it’s always important to compare policies to find one that works for you.

• 13P: Provisional status. Insufficient data is available at launch for classification. This will likely be updated once Thatcham can evaluate the new car.
• 13G: Grey import. Thatcham tests only officially sold UK cars, so imports are evaluated based on the insurer’s pricing.

• Smaller engine

Which other factors affect your car insurance premium?

Here are some other factors that will have a notable impact on your car insurance premium:

• Engine type and capacity. The bigger and more powerful that your engine is, the more it’ll typically cost to insure your car. That’s because larger engines are more expensive to repair or replace, and therefore present a bigger risk to insurers.
• Driver location. Insurers will calculate the likelihood of your car being stolen or involved in an accident based on your location. They will use previous claims data to do this. As an example, a 30-year-old in central London will pay £1,005 for insurance for a Scoda Octavia 1.6 TDI CR S 5d, while the same 30-year-old in Newcastle may only pay £704.
• Driver age. Your age can be one of the most important factors when it comes to determing your car insurance costs. The average 20-year-old driver in London could pay £4,296 for the Vauxhall Astra 1.6 CDTi 16V ecoFLEX Tech Line (Start Stop) 5d, while the average 40-year-old Londoner will only pay £820.

How can I save on my car insurance premiums?

Cheaper cars are mostly cheaper to insure, so buying a car in insurance group 13 is a great way to start.

On top of that, here are a few other things you can do to cut insurance costs.

• Drive safely. If you have previous claims or driving convictions on your record, insurers will perceive as a big risk and hike your premium to make up for this.
• Reduce your mileage. Insurers will ask for your annual mileage and will often offer lower quotes to those who use their car sparingly.
• Install extra safety features. Safety features reduce the risk of you damaging your car and having to make a huge claim. That’s why insurers offer cheaper quotes on vehicles that have lots of safety features installed.
• Don’t just accept your renewal quote. Shop around for the cheapest car insurance quote every year. Often, you’ll save a lot of money by switching providers every year.
