The Citroën C2 arrived on UK roads in 2003, replacing the older Citroën Saxo model that had gradually been entered into a phasing-out. An example of Citroën’s innovation in the supermini field, the C2 has proved surprisingly capable of competing with other models in the field, not least the famous Mini Cooper, although it was discontinued in 2010 ahead of the release of the Citroën DS3.

What are the average insurance rates for the Citroën C2?

We conducted an investigation using a range of variables in order to ascertain how much you’d be expected to pay to insure a C2. To do so, we averaged a variety of quotes offered by several well-known insurance companies. We found that you can keep your C2 insured for an average of £35.10 per month, £369.14 p/a, slightly lower than the amount you’d be expected to pay for the predecessor C1 model.

We used the following information to generate our quotes:

  • Our insurance inquiry was based around a thirty-year-old male driver from Exeter, employed as a secondary school teacher.
  • They were the only driver identified on the policy, owning only a 2010 model Citroën C2.
  • They requested comprehensive insurance.
  • The vehicle was identified as a right-hand drive non-import, possessing factory settings in terms of safety and security features.
  • No other modifications were present on the vehicle.
  • The driver possessed a five-years no-claims discount.
  • The driver also maintained a good credit history and five years without a motoring conviction. They also possessed no non-motoring convictions.
  • The driver kept to the national average of 10,000 miles per year.

Factors that affect your insurance rate

  • How many drivers are identified on your insurance policy?
  • Do you have a spotless record of claims and convictions?
  • Are any modifications present on your vehicle?
  • Insurers will seek information about your personal situation in order to generate a tailor-made insurance quote. This will include details about age, sex, marital status, employment status, and geographical location.
  • Do you pay for your insurance monthly or annually?
  • Where is your vehicle kept during daylight and night-time hours? Is it secure or parked on a residential street where anybody could have access to it?

How can I save money on my car insurance?

Everybody loves to save. Below we’ve come up with some of the best ways you can use the factors we’ve identified above to your advantage and keep your premiums down!

  • Only insure regular drivers on your policy. You can add temporary ones in later, but to add them on a permanent basis would definitely set your premiums skyrocketing.
  • Insurers will likely bring down your premiums if you have a longer record of no claims and no convictions.
  • Modifications are a tricky subject when it comes to insurance. For the most part, car insurance companies don’t seem to like them, and may ramp your premiums as a consequence if they deem you a riskier investment. However, modifications installed professionally with the intent of increasing the safety or security of the vehicle will likely lead to lower premiums.
  • Switching from monthly to annual insurance payments is a big deal when it comes to keep your premiums down. By our estimates, making the switch could save you approximately £52.08 each year.
  • Keep your vehicle as secure as you possible can. This may involve keeping it secure on a driveway or in a garage rather than on a residential street.

Facts about the Citroën C2

  • The C2 was named Best European Hatchback of the Year in September 2003.
  • A different Citroën C2 is sold in China, modelled on the Peugeot 206 which itself is virtually a mirror image of the C2.
  • The C2 can travel 0-60mph in approximately 13.5 seconds.

How safe is the Citroën C2?

Safety is of paramount importance when it comes to buying and insuring a new car. The Citroën C2, however, should put your mind at rest. It received a four-star rating when submitted for the Euro NCAP crash test procedure, which also recorded positive scores for adult and child occupant safety of approximately 80% each. Of particular praise was the protection offered by the vehicle to the head and torso area in a collision situation.

The safety and security features available with the C2 was quite extensive for a car released in 2003. They include the obvious seatbelt pretensioners and airbags, but have expanded to include anti-lock braking, remote central locking, and immobiliser technology in order to keep both you and your vehicle safe. Ask your insurer what extra safety and security features you can add in return for lower premiums.

Bottom line

The Citroen C2 is a reliable vehicle that’s very cheap to insure, especially the less powerful models. It could therefore make a great first car for younger drivers. Better yet, the tips in this guide can help you reduce your premium costs even further.
