If you’re a driver aged over 50, it’s worth checking Age Co. Unlike most insurers, Age Co doesn’t have an upper age limit and its comprehensive policy includes a lot of helpful benefits, such as a courtesy car and the Get You Home service (which ensures you arrive home or to your destination if your car isn’t roadworthy after an accident).

For drivers under 50 and particularly very young or new drivers, Age Co may not be the best car insurance option, as it is specifically tailored to older customers. That said, everyone’s circumstance is different, so you could still benefit from getting a quote.

Who is Age Co?

Age Co is the commercial arm of Age UK, the UK’s largest charity dedicated to helping people in later life. Created in April 2009, Age UK provides free information and advice on a range of topics including money, wellbeing, care, travel and work. Through Age Co, it also offers car insurance designed for the over-50s.

Who underwrites Age Co’s car insurance?

Age Co car insurance policies have 2 different underwriters.

For policies purchased on or after 28 February 2023, cover is provided and underwritten by Liverpool Victoria Insurance Company Limited.

For policies purchased before 22 February 2023, it is arranged and administered by Ageas Retail Limited.

What’s covered under my policy?

Age Co offers 3 levels of cover.

If you’re not worried about any damage to your own car and just want to be protected against harming other people or their property, you can opt for third party only cover. With Age Co, as well as third party liability, this cover includes using the car abroad, a no-claims discount and no-claims discount protection (if eligible).

Optional extras

Age Co offers a range of optional extras that you can add to your policy to give you more peace of mind.

  • Motor legal protection. Covers legal costs in the event of an accident that wasn’t your fault (where a third party can be identified to claim for uninsured losses and personal injuries).
  • Key protection. Covers replacement keys and locks following loss or theft of your car keys. This includes other keys, such as home or office.
  • Excess protection. Reimburses you the excess you pay following a car insurance claim.

What are Age Co’s different policies?

How do I make a claim?

If you purchased a new car insurance policy on or after 28 February 2023, that means your insurance is provided by LV=. You need to call 0330 678 5000 to make a new claim.

If you purchased your policy on or before 22 February 2023, your insurance is provided by Ageas. To make a new claim you need to call 0330 678 5550.

Make sure you have your certificate of motor insurance and details of the incident to hand when you call.

What is my excess?

An excess is the amount of money you contribute when you make a claim. Your excess amount is influenced by a number of personal factors, like the age and model of your car and the level of experience of the drivers on your policy.

If more than one excess applies, they will be added together.

Age Co car insurance customer reviews

Customers who took part in Finder’s 2023 customer satisfaction survey were incredibly positive about Age Co, with many highlighting its “good” customer service and reasonable rates.

One customer said, “Age Co has great staff that care for people, and they are easy to contact. I trust their service.”

Age Co received an overall customer satisfaction score of 3.5 out of 5, and 79% of customers would recommend the brand to a friend.

On customer review platform Trustpilot, Age Co as a company has 4.3 out of 5 stars and a rating of “Excellent”, based on 428 reviews. The helpful staff, easy-to-follow processes and good value were favourites with customers, whereas some complained of unexpected policy cancellations by the company and high quotes (updated May 2024).

How to cancel Age Co car insurance

To cancel your policy you need to call 0330 678 5226 if you purchased your policy after 22 February 2023 or 0345 128 7915 if you purchased it before that date.

If you cancel within 14 days of receiving your documents, there’s no cancellation fee. You’ll get a refund for any money you’ve paid, minus the cost of the cover you’ve had. If you cancel before your policy starts, no charges will be made. If it’s after 14 days and you haven’t made a claim, you’ll get a refund minus the cost of the cover you’ve already had and pay a cancellation charge of £40.
