PayPal’s Pay in 3 buy now, pay later (BNPL) service is available on purchases of £30–£2,000. PayPal Credit is like a credit card, but it’s effectively a credit limit attached to your usual PayPal account. So unfortunately, you can’t simply use it anywhere that takes credit cards. Is PayPal safe?

PayPal is generally a safe place to send and receive money. It will automatically encrypt any confidential information sent to or from your computer using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol, with an encryption key length of 128 bits, the highest level available. Despite this strength, you should do the usual checks when protecting your financial information, including not writing down important numbers or passwords and ensuring that your passwords are strong.

Scammers may try to hack into your PayPal account by sending you emails stating you’ve made a purchase you haven’t made. If you notice anything strange, log in to PayPal normally (not via a link in the email) to check your account hasn’t been compromised.

Is there a PayPal fee for using the service?

There is no fee for opening an account with PayPal, but there are fees for certain types of payments. Here’s what’s free and what you have to pay for in the UK:

How do I pay through PayPal using a credit card?

When creating your PayPal account, you will be given the option to link your credit or debit card to your account. This has the benefit of allowing you to transfer larger sums of money or to withdraw sent money to a nominated bank account. Once you’ve linked your cards to your account, whenever you transfer money or make a payment, you will be given the option of paying from one of your cards.

It’s worth remembering that normally when you pay for an item costing more than £100 using your credit card, you get extra protection under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. For a long time, there was a grey area about whether using your credit card with PayPal meant you lost this protection.

But in a key ruling by the Financial Ombudsman revealed in January 2022, a consumer was able to use this extra protection to get a refund from his credit card provider for faulty goods because he’d used PayPal’s guest checkout – in other words, PayPal was simply processing the payment. If he’d paid using his PayPal account, drawing on his credit card, he would have lost the right to get a refund from his credit card company.

The easiest way to ensure you have section 75 protection on credit card purchases over £100 is to log out of your PayPal account and pay as a guest. This will cut out PayPal as the middleman and show there’s a direct link between your credit card and your purchase.

Is there a limit to how much I can buy using PayPal?

If your account has been verified, there is no limit on the total amount of money you can send, although there is a single transaction limit. You’ll be given the option to verify your PayPal account during set-up.

What is the processing time for PayPal?

Once sent, PayPal funds are typically received within 2–3 days, although this will be much quicker for verified accounts. If you use PayPal to sell or purchase items, the transaction will appear immediately on your account. For international transfers or large amounts, expect to wait up to 21 days for the funds to become available.
