If your business has an irregular income or irregular outgoings (what business doesn't?), then a business charge card can boost your spending power and offer stability.

With a charge card, you're expected to pay your balance in full every month. But provided you do that, with this card you'll be able to take advantage of up to 54 days of 0% interest on purchases (although there are fees to pay if you fail to clear your balance) each billing cycle. The benefits of charge cards include flexibility with payments (purchases at the start of the billing cycle are paid for at the end of the billing cycle) and, in many cases, rewards on your spending.

Some of the key benefits of this card include airport lounge access, Hilton Honors Gold Status, a concierge service, comprehensive worldwide travel insurance (subject to enrolment) for trips of up to 120 days and the opportunity to earn Membership Rewards points as you spend (with a generous bonus on sign-up, subject to a minimum spend).

The option of additional cards enables you to extend benefits to colleagues and employees and easily keep track of business expenses. You'll be able to request one additional card for free, and thereafter each incurs an annual fee.

Pros

  • Earn points on day-to-day spending

  • Customers report excellent customer service when dealing with American Express
  • Up to 80,000 Membership Rewards® welcome bonus

Cons

  • Applicants with low credit scores are unlikely to get accepted
  • Relatively high fee of £650
  • Only 1 free supplementary card
  • Non-sterling transaction fees apply

Repayment options

You can make manual repayments through American Express's app by logging in to your online banking or over the phone. Alternatively, you may wish to set up a direct debit.

A direct debit protects you from forgetting to make a repayment and either damaging your credit score, getting hit with a penalty fee (£12) or losing any promotional rates as a result.

You can arrange a direct debit for repayments when you apply for the credit card. The table below shows the options available.

Choose from the following direct debit options for your monthly repayments:
