Whether you’re driving a brand-new BMW or a pre-owned model, having reliable roadside assistance can make a significant difference. Understanding your options for general roadside assistance can help ensure you’re prepared for any situation.

What is breakdown cover?

Breakdown cover is a type of insurance that provides assistance if your car stops working while you’re on the road. It typically includes services like towing, emergency repairs, and more to get you back on your way or to a nearby garage.

What is roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance is a service that offers help when your vehicle becomes inoperable due to mechanical failure or other issues. Services often include jump-starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and towing to a repair facility.

Where can I get breakdown cover for my BMW?

You can obtain breakdown cover for your BMW from a variety of sources, including insurance companies and specialised breakdown service providers. Some popular options include the AA, RAC, and Green Flag. Comparing these services can help you find the best coverage for your needs.

What will roadside assistance cover for my BMW?

BMW roadside assistance typically covers a comprehensive range of services designed to assist you when faced with vehicle issues. These services often include:

  • Roadside repair services to fix minor mechanical or electrical problems.
  • Towing services to transport your vehicle to a nearby repair facility if it cannot be fixed on-site.
  • Battery jump-starts to help you restart your vehicle if the battery fails.
  • Flat tire changes to replace a punctured or damaged tire with your spare.
  • Lock-out assistance if you accidentally lock your keys inside your vehicle.
  • Fuel delivery if you run out of fuel while on the road.

How much does BMW breakdown cover cost?

The cost of BMW breakdown cover can vary based on several factors beyond the usual considerations such as age and driving history. Additional factors influencing the cost include:

  • Age and condition. As older vehicles may require more extensive assistance.
  • Breakdown history. Including any past incidents that may affect risk assessments.
  • Duration. Whether you opt for short-term or annual coverage.
  • Level of cover. Including any optional extras such as European coverage or enhanced roadside assistance services.

What does BMW breakdown cover include in the UK?

In the UK, BMW breakdown cover typically offers a comprehensive range of services to ensure you receive assistance wherever and whenever you need it. Key features of BMW breakdown cover often include:

  • Roadside assistance and repair to resolve minor issues and get you back on the road quickly.
  • Vehicle recovery services to transport your vehicle to a BMW-approved repair facility if it cannot be repaired at the roadside.
  • Home start services, providing assistance if your vehicle fails to start at your home address.
  • Onward travel options such as car hire or accommodation if your vehicle cannot be repaired promptly, ensuring you can continue your journey or return home.

These comprehensive coverage options ensure that BMW drivers in the UK are well-supported in various breakdown scenarios, offering peace of mind and reliable assistance when needed.

What isn’t covered with general breakdown cover?

General breakdown cover usually excludes:

  • The car is not properly maintained. General maintenance of cars, such as oil checks and tyre checks, are important to ensure a vehicle is safe to drive.
  • The car breaks down on private land. The recovery vehicle may not be able to access the land you’re stranded on.
  • The car breaks down after a collision. At the very least, recovery may be delayed while emergency services tend to the scene of an accident. Some policies may also completely exclude breakdown recovery following a collision.

As with annual breakdown cover, the cost of repairs that can’t be made at the roadside – including replacement parts – won’t be covered by your breakdown policy.

Is short-term or annual cover better value for my BMW?

Danny Butler
Finder insurance expert Danny Butler answers

The answer to this depends on your circumstances and isn’t quite as simple as annual vs short term.

If you drive a car (whether your own or someone else’s) fairly regularly and want the reassurance of having a breakdown service on hand if the car conks out whenever you’re using it, it’s almost certainly cheaper to take out an annual breakdown policy for it. That’s because, per day, short-term breakdown cover is much more expensive than annual cover. You may even find that it’s cheaper to buy an annual policy than one that only covers you for a month.

If, on the other hand, you rarely drive – perhaps borrowing or hiring a car for a couple of days once or twice a year – then temporary breakdown cover could work out cheaper overall. That might apply particularly if you bolt it on to temporary car insurance. This principle might also apply if you feel you don’t usually need breakdown cover (perhaps because you mostly use your car for pottering about locally) but occasionally go on longer trips.

There’s also a third option, whereby you regularly drive your own car, but also drive borrowed or rental cars every now and then. In this case, one option is to take out annual vehicle breakdown cover on your own car and pay for short-term breakdown cover on the other vehicles as needed. But it’s probably also worth exploring the option of annual personal breakdown cover, which protects you whatever car you drive. It’s typically more expensive than a single-vehicle breakdown policy, but could well work out cheaper overall than a vehicle breakdown policy plus multiple temporary policies.
