Our verdict

Offers one affordable plan to file taxes online but doesn’t support returns in certain states.

As its name implies, ezTaxReturn is a straightforward way to file your taxes online. It offers one simple plan, which includes a free federal return for qualified filers who have a simple tax situation. Like many other online tax preparation services, ezTaxReturn offers step-by-step guidance to help you file your taxes correctly. It also comes with maximum refund guarantees. That said, if your tax situation is more complex, such as having self-employment income or itemized deductions, you won’t qualify for a free filing and will need to shell out $29.99 for federal and $24.99 for state. Also, it isn’t available in certain states.

Best for: Taxpayers with simple tax returns who may qualify for a free filing.

Pros

  • No phone waiting
  • Simple pricing model
  • Free federal return for qualified filers

Cons

  • Simple returns only
  • No partial state returns
  • Limitations on tax forms

ezTaxReturn offers a simple, affordable way to file your taxes online. But it’s inconvenient for those who need to file a partial state return or live in one of the 21 states it doesn’t support.

Who is ezTaxReturn best for?

ezTaxReturn is best for those looking for a simple and affordable way to file taxes online. But if you need to file a partial state return or live in one of the few states it doesn’t support, consider looking elsewhere.

What we like about ezTaxReturn

ezTaxReturn keeps things simple, which makes it a solid choice for stress-free tax prep. It’s also an IRS trusted partner for the Free File tax preparation program.

Affordable pricing

The ability to file federal tax returns for free is always a nice perk, and the pricing for state and federal filings for everyone else is pretty fair. If you can’t get a free federal filing with ezTaxReturns, it costs a flat $29.99. For comparison, TurboTax is a very popular online tax service, but if you don’t qualify for free filings, it can cost anywhere from $99 to $309 just for federal filings depending on the plan you choose or are required to use depending on your tax situation.

Free tax return downloads

Free filers can get free federal return downloads until May 15, 2025, and $9.99 downloads afterward.

If you file your state and federal tax returns with ezTaxReturns, you’ll get free copies of your tax returns for up to three years. After three years, you can request a printed tax return via First-Class Mail for $19.99 or get it mailed overnight for $34.99.

Offers extra services

These services are entirely optional.

  • Audit defense protection. For $39.99, ezTaxReturn will represent you during an audit and work with the IRS to minimize penalties.
  • Amended return insurance. For $9.99, this insurance allows you to change a return you already filed.
  • Current-year amended return. For $19.99, you can file a current-year amended return.

Where it falls short

Like most tax filing services, ezTaxReturn lets you pay for your filing with your tax refund (if you’re owed one), or you can pay with a credit or debit card. However, it costs $29.95 to pay for its services with your refund.

It also doesn’t support part-year or non-resident state tax returns and doesn’t let you file state returns in these seven states:

  • Indiana
  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia

Customer reviews and ratings

BBB accreditedYes
BBB ratingA+
BBB customer reviews4.42 out of 5 stars, based on 201 customer reviews
Trustpilot score2.3 out of 5 stars, based on 11 customer reviews
Customer reviews verified as of19 February 2025

Unlike many other financial services or tax preparation companies, ezTazReturn did surprisingly well when it came to its customer reviews on Better Business Bureau (BBB). Though a few people complained about unexpected charges, glitches and poor customer support, many filers find ezTaxReturn easy to use and appreciate its straightforward interface.

On Trustpilot, ezTaxReturn doesn’t do that well. But with only a handful of reviews, it’s not a large enough sample to draw definitive conclusions, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, it’s worth mentioning that these negative reviews were mainly about incorrect tax calculations, unexpected fees and software glitches that make filing frustrating.
