Our verdict
Get access to advanced ESG screening tools while investing in commission-free stocks and exchange-traded funds.
Consider Fennel if you’re interested in environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing. Fennel provides investors with interactive company ESG report cards that offer metrics about points like their carbon footprint, use of green products and diversity of their management teams compared to other companies in the same industry. Fennel also doesn't participate in payment for order flow as a source of revenue, nor does it participate in securities lending.
The Fennel app also provides information about a company’s past and upcoming shareholder votes. For example, investors can see how shareholders in company XYZ voted on whether to report its child labor policies. But despite commission-free trades, joining Fennel requires a $4.99 monthly membership fee. Look elsewhere if you don’t want to pay a monthly fee to invest.
Best for: Investors who want to align their moral and social beliefs with their investing decisions.

Fennel is best for ESG Investors

Where Fennel shines
Fennel stands out for its user-friendly trading app, ESG screening tools and ease of access to actionable company data, along with commission-free stock and ETF trading and custom order routing options. You can view where a company stands on human rights, environmentalism, leadership diversity and more. Fennel also gives you three order routing options so you can choose where your orders go if you want that control.
What’s more, and unlike much of the competition, Fennel doesn’t participate in payment for order flow, a controversial revenue stream for brokers that direct orders for trade execution to particular market makers. Securities lending, another revenue stream for many brokers that strips voting rights from the lender when their stocks are on loan, is another practice Fennel avoids. Voting rights and dividend payments stay with Fennel customers always.
If you’re looking for a broker that’ll help you invest with insight and control, Fennel’s worth your consideration. It’s also a B Certified Corporation, which means it’s gone through a third-party assessment that’s determined that Fennel meets high standards for social and environmental performance.
Where Fennel falls short
Fennel doesn’t offer access to many securities or account types. You can only trade stocks and ETFs through a regular brokerage account. You’ll have to look elsewhere for a more diverse lineup of investment options or if you want to invest through a retirement account.
