    Payday loan alternatives to avoid

    Not every alternative out there is a good solution. These lending methods are considered risky, either due to the collateral required or the high rates, and should be considered a last resort borrowing option.

    • Vehicle title loans. Sometimes called auto title loans, vehicle title loans requires a car that you fully own and putting it up as collateral. If you can’t repay your loan, you risk having your vehicle repossessed — and rates can get very high.
    • Auto equity loans. Similar to vehicle title loans, auto equity loans allow you to borrow against the value of your car by using it as collateral. The risks are almost identical, too. You could lose your car and face APRs in the triple digits.
    • Short-term installment loans. Though not as risky as the above options, short-term installment loans can mean paying double or triple your loan amount in interest alone. While you don’t need to avoid them entirely, you should spend time comparing options to find the best terms.
