What we think of Liberty Mutual car insurance

Liberty Mutual offers a wide selection of coverage options and a convenient online platform. Also, you could benefit from additional programs and features that other companies don’t offer, like teacher perks or a deductible fund.

But, in exchange for the extra perks, you may find a less than stellar customer experience with limited customer support. So if you’re looking for a more personal experience or the most affordable option, you may want to look elsewhere.

Our review of Liberty Mutual RightTrack

Liberty Mutual RightTrack is a telematics car insurance program, which monitors your driving and gives you a discount personalized to how you drive.

    Picture not described

Overall, customers enjoy the app, giving it 4 out of 5 stars on Google Play and 4.4 out of 5 stars on the Apple Store. To get your discount, you’ll need to complete RightTrack’s 90-day review period. Then, you can earn up to 30% off your premium, an amount you’ll see with most other telematics programs.

However, what stands out is that RightTrack isn’t an ongoing program. Instead, the discount applies for as long as you have Liberty Mutual car insurance. Ask to re-enroll in the program if you’d like your discount updated.

As is the case with other programs, Liberty Mutual doesn’t use your driving data just for setting premiums. The company may use it for investigating claims, developing new services for customers or for research.

Review RightTrack’s terms and conditions to make sure you agree with how it’s using your information.

    How RightTrack scores your driving

To get a high score with RightTrack, you can focus on four key areas:

    • Acceleration — How quickly you step on the gas
    • Braking — Limiting rough slowdowns and hard stops
    • Mileage — How many total miles you drive
    • Nighttime driving — Avoiding trips during this high-risk time

Liberty Mutual car insurance reviews and complaints

Liberty Mutual holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and is accredited since 1931. However, it has a long list of customer complaints, involving a lack of communication, denied claims and billing issues.

Liberty Mutual also receives a 1.11 on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners complaint index for private passenger vehicles. Since the industry standard is 1.00, Liberty Mutual’s score shows that it sees many more complaints than normal.

Continuing the trend, the company typically scores below average for each region in the J.D. Power Auto Insurance Satisfaction Study. The one exception to its poor customer satisfaction is in Florida, where Liberty Mutual scored an above-average 837 out of 1,000 points in the J.D. Power study.

Keep in mind that most customers leave reviews when the service is either extraordinary or terrible. Thousands of customers may be satisfied with the service but haven’t bothered to leave a review.
