Our verdict

Strong regulatory practices make this exchange great for security-conscious traders — but it falls behind on available assets.

Gemini boasts a history of strong regulatory compliance and a standout focus on security measures. Coupled with an intuitive, user-friendly platform, these features make it an appealing choice for beginners. However, its high fees, limited staking options and, at times, lackluster customer support might leave intermediate and expert traders ultimately unsatisfied.

Pros

  • An insurance-backed hot wallet storage option
  • A user-friendly interface with advanced trading tools
  • Strong history of regulatory compliance
  • Robust security features, including SOC 2 certification

Cons

  • Higher trading fees than most competitors
  • Limited staking features
  • Fewer tradable assets than other exchanges
  • Inconsistent customer support

Gemini is best for security-conscious beginners

With an easy-to-use platform and a pronounced focus on security, Gemini is a solid choice for beginner traders who prioritize the safety of their funds. While the advanced trading platform is quite powerful, the relatively sparse selection of tradable assets is a major downside, making it less appealing for experienced traders.

Gemini Exchange plans

Gemini Exchange offers access to an advanced trading platform through a separate plan. While it doesn’t come with a monthly subscription cost, it operates with a different trading fee schedule — one that is primarily geared toward high-volume and high-frequency traders.

What we like about Gemini

Gemini caters to both beginners and seasoned traders by offering a simple interface alongside its ActiveTrader platform.

The main platform provides an intuitive experience for users who want to buy, sell or earn rewards without complexity. Meanwhile, ActiveTrader offers pro-level tools, including advanced charting, real-time order books and customizable order types, making it a great option for high-frequency traders.

Gemini’s standout feature is its focus on security. Most user assets are held in cold storage, minimizing exposure to online threats. The platform also offers insurance-backed hot wallets for added protection. Furthermore, Gemini was one of the first exchanges to receive SOC 2 certification, validating its stringent security and operational practices. Users can also enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and whitelist withdrawal addresses to enhance account safety.

Where Gemini falls short

Gemini’s most obvious drawback is the relatively sparse range of tradable assets. While long-term, buy-and-hold investors and beginners likely won’t be affected, those who favor short-term trading strategies and prefer having a diverse set of assets on hand will likely find this to be a decisive flaw.

Gemini charges a 0.5% convenience fee above the market price, in addition to a transaction fee that varies by trade size. In contrast, platforms like Binance and Kraken offer lower fees, making Gemini less appealing to frequent traders or those dealing with high volumes.

Staking is another issue. After an initially ambitious program failed to take off, Gemini Exchange slashed its staking program. At present, only three assets — MATIC, ETH and SOL — can be staked, with relatively modest yields of 4.12%, 3.81% and 2.43%, respectively.

Finally, the platform’s customer support leaves much to be desired, both in terms of accessibility and speed, when compared to most competitors.

Listed Gemini Exchange assets

Gemini Exchange allows clients to trade 80 digital assets, including some of the most popular cryptocurrencies. However, on the whole, the selection falls short of the competition — and the lack of Cardano and Sui, in particular, are keenly felt.

Still, for investors who are interested in mainstream assets, this shouldn’t prove to be too much of an issue.

  2. Select an individual or institutional account, depending on your preference.

Gemini’s customer support is a particularly sore spot. In stark contrast with most other facets of the platform, customer support is lackluster at best. All support inquiries must be submitted through Gemini’s website. To make matters worse, tickets generally take days to be resolved.

What do people on Reddit say?

On Reddit, many users highlight Gemini’s regulatory prowess, claiming that since it is based in New York, it must follow some of the strictest financial laws in the country. One user says Gemini is the only exchange they trust. However, others note that it offers fewer assets than other exchanges like Coinbase and Robinhood.

I have a Coinbase account now. Because I am a Canadian resident, they won’t allow me to use my Wells Fargo bank for deposits.(U.S.) I have been dealing in u.s. Funds. Can I sign up with Gemini and continue to use my U.S. Bank? Also if I withdraw funds, can I transfer back to my U.S. Bank?

Hi Don,

Thanks for getting in touch with finder. I hope all is well with you. :)

Gemini accepts US dollars via Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposits or wire transfers. For this reason, you can use your US bank account to deposit money to your account given you use the aforementioned methods.

As of now, you can only withdraw crpyto coins from Gemini and not fiat money.

For more information, you may want to directly get in touch with Gemini’s customer support.

I hope this helps. Should you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach us out again.

Have a wonderful day!

Cheers,

Joshua

I have a question. I want to buy ripple, how I should do that?

Hi Kim,

Thanks for your inquiry.

You can buy Ripple as you would buy any other cryptocurrency: from an online exchange. Most require you to go through a verification process but once done you just buy the XRP as you would any other product online. Finally, transfer the coins to your wallet for safekeeping.

Cheers,

Rench
