Our verdict

Gate.io offers over 500 crypto assets and 1,000 trading pairs. Here's our review which covers fees, cryptos

If you are looking to trade cryptos across a wide range of trading pairs, with competitive fees, Gate.io might be a good choice. Its focus on listing smaller market cap assets draws in users who are interested in those coins and tokens. This is because they are often slow to be listed on any other centralized exchange, giving Gate.io an advantage.

Gate.io is able to list whatever cryptos it wishes because it is unregulated. This means there is no protection for the consumer. It may be better to avoid the exchange if that statement is concerning. That being said, there are many ways to earn passive income on the platform and it is fairly easy to navigate if you are familiar with trading interfaces.

Pros

  • Over 2219 cryptocurrencies supported. Gate.io supports 2219+ assets, which should give you a good range of industries and asset types to invest in without needing to hop between multiple exchanges.
  • Deposit and withdraw USD directly to your bank account in the US. With Gate.io you can deposit cash from your American bank account and cash out back into the same account.
  • Supports a range of payment methods. Gate.io supports several popular payment methods including USD deposits via Bank transfer and Credit card.
  • Customer support available via live chat. Gate.io is contactable through live text chat customer support.

Cons

  • USD deposits and withdrawals are not supported. Gate.io does not support USD trading accounts. You may still be able to purchase crypto using a credit or debit card via the platform's instant purchase feature, although foreign exchange fees might apply.
  • No mobile app available. Gate.io does not have a dedicated mobile app. You can still use the platform on your phone, but the experience may not be as smooth as other platforms that have smartphone apps.

About Gate.io — company background

Gate.io is a crypto-to-crypto exchange platform that started in 2013 as Bter.com before rebranding to Gate.io in 2017. The exchange was originally based in China, but has since moved to the Cayman Islands. An important aspect of Gate.io is that it is an unregulated exchange. This means there is no oversight for the platform and this increases risks of using it.

Gate.io offers an extensive selection of cryptocurrencies for trading, with competitive trading fees. It also specializes in smaller market cap assets that many regulated exchanges will not list.

Listed Gate.io crypto exchange assets

Gate.io supports over 2219 cryptocurrencies, but some notable assets are missing. Namely, Tether, Wrapped stETH and WETH, which are in the top 20 cryptos by market cap. In total, 17 of the top 20 cryptos are available on Gate.io.

Gate.io uses a maker taker fee structure for spot market trading. Instant purchases incur a separate fee.

Maker fee explained. A maker fee is the fee charged when you propose an order for other traders to take. In other words, this fee is charged when you place a limit order to sell an asset, but that order is not filled immediately.

Taker fee explained. A taker fee is a fee charged when a buy order is matched immediately with a sell order on the books. This is the fee charged when you place a market buy order.

How to sign up on Gate.io exchange

Before you can even get started trading on Gate.io, you have to go through the rigorous verification process (which usually involves providing proof of identification). This can take time. The reason for this is Gate.io's commitment to certifications and compliance with regulations and insurers.

  1. Get started
After selecting the Get Started button, fill in the create account form.
  2. Set up payment
Before you can start trading, you have to add your bank account to your Gate.io account. There are several options to choose from, so choose the option most compatible.
  3. Provide identification
Before you can make withdrawals and increase your transaction limits, you must submit proof of address and some additional identification. Use either a passport or a driver's license for this.
  4. Start trading
After all that is processed, you're ready to trade on Gate.io.

Is Gate.io safe?

Gete.io has strong security, and has only been hacked once in its history. Gate.io has no insurance policy for users.

Past hacks
There have been no hacks of Gate.io under its current iteration. However, it started as Bter.com, which was hacked successfully in February 2015. During the hack, 7,170 BTC was stolen from the platform. The company announced that affected users would be repaid in batches using the exchange's future profits in conjunction with a BTC loan they received. There have been no hacking incidents since.

Security audits
There have been no audits of the exchange's security systems. In 2020, the company had an audit to prove Bitcoin reserves done by Armanino. It proved it had the reserves to cover customers' holdings. However, it is the only asset it has had audited, and it proves nothing about the security of the exchange.

Insurance
There is no insurance provided for users of Gate.io. However, in instances where users' accounts were affected, the company reimbursed them out of pocket.

Keeping your crypto secure

All centralised exchanges, including Gate.io, are vulnerable to counterparty risks like hacking, theft and insolvency. Using a self-custodial or hardware wallet is widely accepted as the best way to improve the security of your funds. We've shared some of our top picks below.

Gate.io customer support

Gate.io offers little in the way of customer support. There is a live chat option that initially directs you to the FAQ. Failing to find an answer in there, you can talk to a bot. If that doesn’t solve the issue, then users can choose to speak to a human who responds fairly quickly (under 2 minutes when requested by Finder). The only other contact is by email.

Both methods of customer service have been rated poorly by sites such as Trustpilot. Poor reviews indicate a lack of helpful answers, or really slow response times. Users are advised to do due diligence before registering for any exchange, including Gate.io.
