What is Marinade Staked SOL?

mSOL is a liquidity provider token associated with the Marinade Finance protocol, a decentralized finance (DeFi) application built on the Solana blockchain. Marinade Finance was developed as a staking protocol to give SOL token holders the ability to earn staking rewards from the Solana blockchain while maintaining the liquidity of SOL coins.

According to the project's whitepaper, the Marinade protocol functions as a decentralized autonomous organisation (DAO) that is designed to help bolster Solana's censorship-resistant framework even further, primarily via the use of modules such as liquid staking. To stake within Solana, SOL coins usually need to be locked for a set period. With Marinade Finance, you can deposit SOL tokens into the protocol and receive mSOL tokens in return. The deposited SOL tokens then earn rewards from the Solana blockchain and the mSOL tokens can be used within other DeFi applications – amplifying your liquidity. In addition to creating extra liquidity, Marinade delegates staked SOL using a permissionless algorithmic delegation ecosystem that consists of over 400 validators. This helps to further decentralize the Solana blockchain. Eventually, when it comes to unstaking, mSOL tokens are used to represent the total number of staked SOL tokens originally deposited within the Marinade Finance protocol.
