Our verdict

A law firm with a team of attorneys that can help you dispute credit report errors — but with a cost.

Lexington Law is one of the largest credit repair law firms in the US. Its credit repair service consists of a group of attorneys and paralegals who work to help challenge inaccurate negative marks on your credit reports that are harming your credit score. As part of its credit repair service, you'll also get identity theft insurance and personalized score improvement strategies. You can get a no-cost assessment before you sign up, and after that you'll pay $139.95 per month. But they've had legal troubles regarding its billing practices for its credit repair services and filed for bankruptcy in 2023. And like most credit repair services, it can't do anything you can't do yourself and there's no guarantee its service can remove inaccuracies.

Best for: Those who need help disputing credit report errors.

Pros

  • Credit repair assistance with attorneys and paralegals
  • Disputes credit report errors on your behalf
  • Identity theft protection and other services with plan

Cons

  • Bankruptcy in 2023

Lexington Law in the news

In August 2023, Lexington Law and CreditRepair.com entered into a settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for $2.7 billion. These companies were charging advance fees for credit repair services over the phone — which is against the law. Credit repair companies can only charge customers for its services after it delivers and proves results. By charging customers fees over the phone before any services were provided, customers were illegally charged $3.1 billion from March 2016 through March 2023, according to the CFPB.

In June 2023, shortly before the case was settled, Lexington Law and PGX Holdings Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and laid off hundreds of employees. As part of the legal settlement, Lexington Law and CreditRepair.com are banned from using telemarketing to sell their credit repair services for 10 years.

In a recent update, customers who were charged illegal fees are set to see a refund delivered in January 2025.

Lexington Law plans and cost

Lexington Law offers two plans: The $139.95 monthly plan is for fixing credit with negative items, while the Lex onTrack plan is for maintaining good credit after repairing it.

PlanBest forCostServices
PremiumRepairing your credit$139.95 per month
  • Lawyers and paralegals to identify inaccurate credit report errors
  • Reviews credit reports with three major bureaus
  • Personalized credit score improvement plan
  • Crafts challenge letters on your behalf
  • $1 million in identity theft insurance
  • Monthly TransUnion FICO score updates
  • Cease and desist creditor interventions
Lex onTrackMonitoring your credit$24.95 + tax per month
  • Monitors your credit
  • Credit report alerts
  • Disputes new negative items
  • $1 million in identity theft insurance

The Lex onTrack plan starts at $24.95 per month (plus taxes), and is a credit monitoring service, offering the convenience of accessing your credit reports and FICO-generated credit score. Just know that it’s your right to get free copies of your credit reports from each of the credit bureaus.

With the credit repair plan, there’s a first payment of $139.95 charged within the first five to 15 days. You can avoid the first payment within the first five days if you decide not to move forward with Lexington Law’s services.

If you decide to continue, you’ll make the first payment of $139.95, followed by monthly payments of $139.95 starting 30 days after your initial payment. It’s common for credit repair companies to require these types of payments.

While credit repair companies aren’t legally allowed to charge you before delivering credit repair services, Lexington Law is likely able to charge fees immediately due to the other services it provides in its plans, such as the identity theft insurance.

Where it falls short

Lexington Law charges $139.95 per month. While it’s not the highest we’ve seen, like most credit repair services, they can’t really do anything you can legally do yourself for free. There are also late fees if you miss a payment on your monthly plan, which costs $19.95, $9.95, or $4.95, depending on your service level.

Compared to other credit repair companies, the price is slightly above average, and there are more affordable options out there. For example, while Lexington includes identity theft insurance up to $1 million, credit repair company Credit Versio starts at $24.95 per month and offers identity theft insurance up to $1 million. There’s also Credit Firm, a credit repair law firm, which starts at $49.99 per month, but it doesn’t offer identity theft insurance.

You can fix credit report mistakes yourself

There’s never a guarantee that a credit repair company can remove an error from your credit reports. By paying for a service like this, it’s a risk you’ll have to accept.

And this is key: Credit repair companies really can’t do anything you can’t do yourself. Lexington Law reviews your credit reports to identify errors and then disputes them on your behalf. But you’re legally allowed to dispute and check your own credit reports as often as you’d like, and it doesn’t harm your credit rating either.

To dispute an error, you can contact the credit bureau directly via phone or submit a dispute online. Once the bureau’s been contacted, it has 30 to 45 days to respond. In most cases, you’ll need to provide proof that the negative mark is incorrect, and if proven, it’ll remove it.

But Lexington Law could be worth the cost if you prefer to have someone send challenge letters on your behalf and create a credit repair plan for you.

Banned from telemarketing

Lexington Law is banned from telemarketing for 10 years because it was charging advance fees for credit repair services over the phone, which is illegal. On its site, Lexington Law states this is one reason why it doesn’t do phone signups:

“Federal regulations severely restrict the sale of credit repair services over the phone. And although we believe that this regulation is unfair (and we’ve gone to court to challenge it — unsuccessfully), the rule stands. Some of the many amateur credit repair companies out there choose to break the law, but we don’t.”

However, its most recent legal settlement with the CFPB paints a different picture, as the court banned them from using telemarketing after it concluded that Lexington Law broke the law.

What we like about Lexington Law

Lexington Law employs attorneys and paralegals to help you challenge negative marks on your credit reports. They will contact credit bureaus to send challenge letters (dispute letters) on credit report errors for you. It also offers a free credit assessment online before you sign up for a paid plan.

The site offers lawyer profiles so you can check them out, and it pulls your Experian and TransUnion credit reports to view any errors that need to be corrected, and shows you how to request your Equifax credit report.

How to sign up

Lexington Law is banned from using telemarketing services for 10 years, so you can’t sign up over the phone. You can sign up on its site for a free credit assessment online and choose a plan if you want to move forward with the service. Once you’re officially a customer, you can talk to Lexington Law over the phone.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

Customer experience

Lexington Law has a poor reputation. On Trustpilot, it has a 2.7-star rating out of a few hundred reviews. One of the most common themes among negative reviews is that customers paid hundreds of dollars to get errors removed from their credit reports with little to no results. But with any credit repair company, there are no guarantees that errors can be removed.

Lexington Law has a decent number of positive reviews despite the recent bad press. Happy customers report helpful and patient representatives, appreciate the credit repair guidance and how representatives comb through your credit reports with you. Other positive reviews definitely call out the hefty monthly price, but many say the cost is worth the assistance they received.
