Finder Awards winner

Juno is a premier checking account when it comes to rewards. You get an APY-like annual bonus rate of 5% APY on balances between $20,000 and $250,000 and 3% APY on balances below $20,000. This is on top of offering 5% cash back at select retailers on up to $500 to $6,000, depending on your membership tier. But Juno doesn't support joint accounts or wire transfers, which may be deal breakers depending on your needs.

Best for: Tech-savvy consumers who want to earn cashback rewards for purchases.

Pros

  • 5% yearly bonus on balances up to $250,000
  • Option to receive direct deposits in crypto
  • 5% cashback rewards at eligible retailers

What makes Juno shine

Juno offers high bonus and cashback rewards that are hard to find with other checking accounts. Dive into the features to see how it stands out.

Cashback rewards

Juno is one of just a handful of checking accounts on the market that offers cashback rewards on purchases. Juno supports a wide list of merchants through which your spending is eligible for cash back. You choose five from the list of participating merchants to earn 5% cash back when you shop with that merchant, up to a certain spending limit depending on the membership tier you’re under.

For both the Basic and Metal tier, you earn 5% cash back on five brands. But the Basic plan caps rewards on up to $500 in purchases a year, while the Metal plan is capped at $6,000 per year.

Depending on your tier, here’s how much you could earn if you spend $1,000 a year with your five favorite brands:

PlanTotal cash back earned in a year
Basic$25
Metal$50

Here’s what you’ll earn if you spend $3,000 a year:

PlanTotal cash back earned in a year
Basic$25
Metal$150

No matter how much you spend a year, you earn the same amount of cash back with the Basic plan, since it’s capped at $500. While Metal users continue earning more cash back until they reach the $6,000 spending limit.

Crypto rewards

A new addition to the account is the ability to earn JCOIN Rewards, Juno’s native coin as part of it’s loyalty program. This currency let’s you boost your cashback rewards limits or your account savings rate for a certain period of time by spending JCOINs. You can earn JCOINs in one of three ways.

  1. Direct deposit. For every dollar you deposit into your account through direct deposit, you’ll earn 1 JCOIN. If you choose to get paid in crypto, you’ll earn 2 JCOINs for every equivalent dollar.
  2. Spending with a Juno card. For every dollar you spend using your Juno card, you’ll earn 1 JCOIN. If you spend in crypto, you’ll earn 2 JCOINs for every equivalent dollar.
  3. Refer a friend. Refer a friend to Juno and you’ll earn $10 and 1,000 JCOINs when they fund their crypto wallet.

The full details of the boosting system aren’t yet known, though it appears you can boost your cashback limits as well as your interest bonus on your checking account.

Bonus savings

The chief draw of Juno is the bonus savings you earn on your balance. Combined with the cashback rewards also available on the card, you generate a lot of value without much effort.

Whether you’re in the Basic or Metal tier, all members earn a 5% annualized bonus rate on balances between $20,000 and $250,000 and 3% on balances below $20,000. This bonus is calculated daily and compounded monthly.

Here is how much you may earn with the bonus rate based on your account balance over the course of one year:

Account balanceBonus rateTotal earned in a year
$10,0005%$511.90
$30,0003%$912.65

Although you’re limited to receiving the savings bonus on the first $250,000 total held in your account, this isn’t a major drawback. This is because like most accounts, you’re only FDIC insured up to $250,000.

Crypto pay

Juno also comes with several optional crypto integrations if you choose to diversify your savings. Chief among them is the ability to buy or sell supported cryptocurrency through the Juno app. Supported networks include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, Stellar, Polygon, Arbitrum and Optimism.

Juno also allows you to receive all or part of your direct-deposit paycheck in a Juno-supported cryptocurrency. Receiving your paycheck as crypto will earn you twice the amount of JCOINs you would otherwise earn by receiving your direct deposit in US dollars.

Juno’s ATM network and fees

Juno is part of the Allpoint and MoneyPass ATM networks, giving you free access to more than 85,000 ATMs nationwide. Plus, get one out-of-network ATM reimbursement on the Basic plan and three reimbursements on the Metal plan.

Where Juno falls short

For all its strengths, Juno does have a few shortcomings. It lacks a few features that tend to be present on a majority of checking account: wire transfers for funds and joint accounts. And in terms of pure APY, it lags a bit behind some dedicated high-yield savings accounts, which may offer APYs of 3.50% or more. So if you’re looking to grow your savings, you’ll want to look at a high-yield savings account instead.
