Pros

Our take on Travelers IntelliDrive program

Telematics measures your driving behaviors to set your car insurance rates or offer a discount. Travelers IntelliDrive is a 90-day telematics program that uses a smartphone app to measure and record your driving habits.

Drivers in most states could see savings up to 30% after they complete the trial drive. In Nevada, the discount goes up to 40%. In North Carolina and New Jersey, the total possible discount is limited to 22%, and in Florida, it’s 25%. The 30% potential discount is on the high end compared to other competitors’ telematics discounts, which usually range from 20-30%.

Some drivers won’t see any discount if their driving habits don’t support it. And some drivers see their rates increase, although Travelers won’t raise your rates in DC, Montana or North Carolina for riskier driving habits. Not every insurer raises rates based on telematics data, so you might compare other pay-as-you-go car insurance policies to find the right one for you.

How Travelers IntelliDrive works

The Travelers IntelliDrive program measures your key driving habits for 90 days, including how often you use your phone, how fast you drive, how hard you brake and the time of day you drive. By downloading a smartphone app and agreeing to share your data, you’ll receive an initial enrollment discount of 10%.

After 90 days, if your driving habits merit a discount, Travelers applies it to your policy at your next renewal. You could save up to 30%, but some drivers won’t see a discount while others may see an increase.

Participants need to drive at least 500 miles during their 90-day trial to register sufficient data for a driving score — if you don’t, you’ll receive a neutral score. Drivers can opt to complete another 90-day trial if they’re not satisfied with their driving score. Travelers also can ask drivers to complete a second trial period.

You’ll need a smartphone to participate, and the app is available for iOs and Androids. All drivers on your policy need to enroll in IntelliDrive and complete the trial. Otherwise, your discount is reduced.

IntelliDrive rates are based on 5 driving behaviors

The IntelliDrive app measures key driving habits to rate your driving:

  • Speed. The faster you’re driving, the less time you have to react to changing driving conditions.
  • Acceleration. Fast acceleration is measured by the app and can lower your driving score.
  • Braking. Braking hard is sometimes unavoidable, but the app records instances of hard braking during your drive.
  • Time of day. It’s riskier to drive late at night — usually from midnight to 5 a.m.
  • Distracted driving. The app measures if you make handheld calls while driving or interact with your phone in other ways. Apps running in the background, like navigation, don’t affect your driving score unless you interact with it while driving.

How to join Travelers IntelliDrive

Purchase a Travelers auto policy and ask about enrolling in IntelliDrive.

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Invite the other drivers on your policy to download the app and join.
  3. Drive for 90 days — traveling at least 500 miles during this time — to determine your driving score.
  4. Check the app regularly for driving tips and your trip details. You have 10 days from each trip to make changes to your driver or passenger status.
  5. Earn your driving score and discount after your 90-day trial.

Drivers can opt out within 45 days of enrollment but lose their enrollment discount. If you’ve completed the 90-day trial period and driven at least 500 miles during it, your driving score discount may still apply at your next renewal.

Save up to 30% with IntelliDrive

New customers enrolling in the IntelliDrive program receive an initial discount of 10%. Many peers offer a 5-10% discount upon enrolling, so this is a competitive discount from Travelers. After the 90-day measurement period, drivers can see discounts up to 30%.

Once you’ve completed your 90 days, you can delete the app and Travelers doesn’t measure your driving after that. You run the risk of your rates increasing if your driving habits are risky, and not every competitor increases rates based on your telematics driving score.

How Travelers shares your data

Travelers may use your telematics and other personal information to develop your driving score and subsequently your rate. It also uses your data for claims investigations, research, fraud prevention, policy administration, marketing and other business purposes.

Travelers may share your data within its family of companies and with third parties, including vendors, regulators, consumer reporting agencies and the government. It shares data for regulatory and compliance reasons, to comply with legal requirements, to market to you and for research.

Travelers IntelliDrive reviews and complaints

The Travelers IntelliDrive app has 4.5 stars out of 5 in the App Store with a total of 562 ratings.

Some common complaints about the app include:

  • The app is too sensitive. Many drivers complain about the app’s sensitivity to speed, acceleration and braking, complaining it was too severe if you had to stop at a yellow light or avoid a car pulling in front of you.
  • Time of day reductions frustrated many. Policyholders who commute during early morning hours complained their score was reduced for the early time and others noted driving after work to the grocery store was counted against them for the rush hour timing.
  • Drivers want to contest “events”. When a driver’s score is lowered based on a driving “event,” there isn’t a way for a driver to dispute it. Some customers felt their score was unfairly reduced, but they couldn’t respond to it.

Other users love the app and praised its features:

  • Driving tips are useful. Users appreciated the safe driving tips and increased awareness of their risky driving habits.
  • Instant feedback changes behavior. Some policyholders liked the instant feedback of reviewing a trip after completing it to learn about any negative “events” they had.
  • User-friendly app. Customers like the layout of the app and find it user-friendly.

IntelliDrive app features

The IntelliDrive app has convenient features to help drivers track their progress toward a discount.

  • Dashboard. Your dashboard is a quick way to view your progress and recent trips.
  • Driving tips. Helpful driving tips are displayed in the app.
  • Trip details. The app shows a map of your recent trips and points out where you had a hard braking or fast acceleration event, which can help you change your driving behavior on roads you frequent.
  • Distraction-free streak. You can easily view how many distraction-free trips you’ve made in a row or challenge your family members to increase their streak.

What to watch out for

The app uses your phone’s battery when at rest and slightly more when taking a trip. Data is transmitted over WiFi or your data plan, whichever is available when it uploads. Travelers notes its app is designed to use as little data as possible, but be aware of the possible impact on your phone bill and data plan.
