⚠️ Warning: Be cautious with payday loans
High-cost payday loans are unsustainable for borrowing over a continued period of time and are expensive as a means of longer-term borrowing. If you're experiencing financial hardship call Credit Counselling Canada for free financial counselling (Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm at +1 866-398-5999). You may also want to consider payday loan alternatives. Maximum borrowing costs will vary by province. Review the maximum borrowing cost for your province before entering into a loan agreement.

Highlights of ODSP payday loans

  • Quick. Applying, approval and funding don’t take much time or effort compared to other loans. You can get online ODSP payday loans on the same day, in as little as 30 minutes.
  • Loan amount. The maximum you can borrow in Ontario is $1,500, but it also depends on your income. By law, payday lenders can’t lend you more than 50% of your income.
  • Borrowing fee. The fee is $14 for every $100 borrowed. The annual cost of the loan (expressed as the annual percentage rate, or APR) can be over 300%.
  • Loan term. In most cases, you’ll repay the loan in full the next time you receive your Ontario disability benefits (at the end of the month).
  • No need for good credit. People with bad credit scores are still eligible for ODSP payday loans.
  • Cooling period. By law, you have a two-day cooling period, which means you can cancel your loan within that time period for any reason without penalty.
  • Direct deposit or e-transfer. If you apply online, you can get money via direct deposit or e-transfer. E-transfer is faster.

Before you apply online

  • Check for a licence. Avoid payday lenders that are not licensed to operate in Ontario. Compare licensed payday lenders.
  • Learn about payday loan regulations. Make sure the lender you’re working with follows all regulations for payday loans in Ontario.
  • Be certain you’ll have enough income left. Once you repay a payday loan, you’ll have less income for other debts and expenses. If there isn’t enough money until your next income deposit, you might be tempted to take out another payday loan. This can trap you in a cycle of debt. In Ontario, if you take out 3 payday loans within a 63-day period, you have a right to pay your third loan (and subsequent loans) in installments.

Can you get ODSP payday loans 24/7 via e-transfer?

Yes, there are payday lenders that accept ODSP income and can e-transfer money to you 24/7, such as iCash and Loan Express. E-transfer is the most common funding method for online payday lenders.

To get e-transfer payday loans in Canada, make sure your bank account is registered for Interac e-transfer.

Must read: E-transfer is subject to bank processing limitations

You can get your ODSP payday loan e-transferred just minutes after sending in your contract. But no matter which payday lender you choose, getting money this fast isn’t guaranteed, because e-transfer is subject to your bank’s processing limitations. You could experience delays of up to 30 minutes.

Can you get ODSP payday loans online the same day you apply?

Yes, there are lenders who offer ODSP payday loans online within the same day of applying. Some of the fastest payday lenders can fund you in as little as two minutes after approval via e-transfer. Here’s a list of lenders you can visit:

Can you get no refusal payday loans in Canada with ODSP?

Some legitimate lenders in Canada, like iCash, advertise no refusal payday loans for ODSP loan recipients, but even they still have some criteria for approval. “No refusal” simply refers to loans with very minimal eligibility requirements.

That said, you should still be wary of any lender offering “no refusal” or “guaranteed approval” ODSP payday loans. These catchy taglines, along with “no credit check,” are classic tactics scammers use to reel in people who are in tough financial situations.

Which payday lenders do not accept ODSP?

Not all lenders accept government disability income. Here’s a list of some popular payday lenders in Canada who don’t offer ODSP payday loans. Some of these providers might accept private disability income but not government disability.

Can you get ODSP loans with no credit check?

Yes, you can get ODSP loans without having to go through a credit check. Rather than focusing on your credit score, lenders will focus on your income. Having positive cash flow—that is, having more money going into your bank account than going out—will boost your odds of approval.

Examples of lenders that don’t do credit checks and do accept ODSP include Cashco, KOHO, Bree and Nyble.

ODSP cash advances—a worthy alternative to payday loans

Cash advance apps first launched in Canada in 2021. These are small loans, usually up to $500, that are designed to pay for emergency bills or avoid overdrafts. Cash advance apps are open to many types of income, including ODSP.

What to expect from cash advance apps

  • No interest or late fees. There’s no need to worry about interest or late payment fees, but you might pay a monthly subscription fee and/or instant funding fee.
  • Smaller loan amounts. You can’t borrow as much money compared to payday and installment loans. In fact, the lender could start you off with less than $80.
  • Repayment flexibility. Cash advance apps may provide more freedom than payday loans. KOHO and Nyble, for example, allow you to extend due dates if you think you need more time to repay.
  • Fast. Like payday loans, it’s possible to get instant approval and funding 24/7.
  • Limited availability. Cash advance apps are fairly new in Canada, so there aren’t many providers to compare.

Your third option: ODSP installment loans

Finally, you have ODSP installment loans, which generally offer larger amounts and longer terms than payday loans and cash advances. Unfortunately, not many installment loan lenders consider ODSP as valid income.

Out of the three types of loans, installment loans are the hardest to get approved for.

Features of installment loans that accept ODSP

  • Interest rates. Rates for ODSP installment loans typically range between 18% - 35%.
  • Loan amounts. You can usually borrow anywhere from $500 to $5,000.
  • Loan terms. Term lengths can last between 3 - 60 months.
  • No prepayment penalties. Save on interest by repaying early or making extra payments. These loans typically don’t have prepayment penalties.
  • Unsecured. Likes payday loans and cash advances, these loans don’t need collateral.
  • Bad credit is OK. It’s possible to get an ODSP installment loan with fair or bad credit under 660.

Before you apply

  • Know the cost. These loans can have high interest rates, so find out how much you’ll pay in interest before committing.
  • Check for fees. See if the loan has any extra charges like NSF fees, late payment fees or broker fees.
  • Watch out for loan insurance. You may be offered insurance to cover missed payments for reasons like unemployment. This is completely optional, and remember, it adds to the overall cost of your loan.

Are you eligible for online ODSP loans?

Eligibility requirements vary by lender, but generally, you’ll need to:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or resident.
  • Have a recurring deposit of ODSP income in your bank account.

How to compare ODSP loans

With so many options presented to you, how do you know which one is right for your situation? Here are some factors to consider:

  • APRs. The APR is the interest rate and fees you must pay to get the loan. It’s one of the most important factors to look at because it gives you a truer view of the cost of the loan than the interest rate alone. Payday loans, for example, have APRs in the triple digits.
  • Loan term. ODSP payday loans need to be repaid in full the next time your receive ODSP. If you need more flexibility, consider an installment loan or cash advance app.
  • Loan amount. If you need to borrow less than $500, you may have difficulty finding an ODSP installment loan. On the other hand, if you need to borrow more than $500, a cash advance app might not suit your needs.
  • Fees. Does the lender have any fees like late payment fees, admin fees, broker fees or prepayment penalties? If you’re unsure, ask your lender for a full breakdown.
  • Reputation of the lender. When browsing loans, research lenders thoroughly. Be wary of lenders that guarantee loan approval. Legitimate lenders will assess your financial circumstances and ability to manage payments before approving.
  • Speed. If you need to borrow money right now, payday loans and cash advance apps are faster than installment loans.

How to apply online

Applying for ODSP loans online is straightforward:

  1. Check your credit score. Before applying, you might want to check your credit score so you have a solid idea of how your application will look to lenders. You can get a free annual credit report from Equifax and TransUnion.
  2. Compare lenders. Compare interest rates, loan amounts, loan terms and more to find the best option for your needs.
  3. Submit your application. Once you’ve decided who’s best for you, fill out an application. Click the Go to site button above to be redirected to the lender’s application page.
  4. Get a decision. You’ll usually hear back right away, especially if you go with a payday lender or cash advance app.
  5. Once approved, receive your funds. Depending on the lender, you could get funds by direct deposit or Interac e-transfer. Many online lenders transfer funds within minutes or 24 hours.

Tips for getting loans while on ODSP

Keep these tips in mind for a less stressful experience:

  • Do not rush. Don’t sign without understanding the terms of your loan, including the rate, loan term, costs and repayment schedule. Avoid lenders that pressure you into signing.
  • Steer clear of lenders that ask for payment upfront. Legitimate lenders do not ask for this. If a lender is asking you to pay money before you receive the loan, it’s likely a scam.
  • Avoid lenders that require insurance for payday loans. Lenders cannot offer or require insurance when you take out a payday loan in Ontario. For ODSP installment loans, it should be optional.
  • Have your documents ready. Lenders will likely need to see your personal ID and proof of income such as bank statements or recent tax Notices of Assessment (NOA). Having this ready before applying will help you avoid delays and receive your ODSP loan faster.
  • Make sure you can manage the repayment schedule. Missed payments can result in expensive late payment fees and NSF fees.

What is the Ontario Disability Support Program?

The Ontario Disability Support Program (or ODSP) covers the costs of basic needs (like food, clothing, shelter and prescriptions) for Ontario residents who have physical or mental impairments that affect their day-to-day functioning.

To qualify, you’ll need to be assessed by a medical doctor then assigned a caseworker who will manage your file. They’ll determine how much money you’re eligible for each month.

When will I get my ODSP payments?

ODSP payments are deposited into your bank account around the last working day each month. After your application is approved, a case worker will reach out to discuss details of your benefits, including when your first payment will be sent. Here’s the 2025 ODSP payment schedule for upcoming payments:

  • April 30, 2025
  • May 30, 2025
  • June 30, 2025
  • July 31, 2025
  • August 29, 2025
