Is Cash One legitimate?

Cash One (cashone.ca) is not a licensed payday lender in Ontario, where it’s registered as a business, or in Nova Scotia, the location of its mailing address. As a result, we’re not signing off on the legitimacy of Cash One as a payday lender.

Our research into Cash One Inc. raised the following concerns:

  • Not a licensed payday lender. Despite the fact that Cash One Inc. is registered as an Ontario business corporation, we couldn’t find any mention of Cash One Inc. when we searched the Ontario government’s database of licensed payday lenders. We also couldn’t find it on the list of licensed payday lenders in Nova Scotia, which is where Cash One Inc.’s mailing address is located.
  • No physical address. We couldn’t find a physical address listed on the Cash One website. Instead, a mailing address in Nova Scotia is provided.
  • Not BBB accredited. Cash One does not have Better Business Bureau accreditation and has a D+ rating from the bureau. As of March 2024, the BBB had closed eight complaints against Cash One in the previous three years.
  • Limited reviews. There aren’t many online customer reviews of Cash One Inc., and those that we could find were largely negative.

How to find a legitimate payday lender

If you want to apply for a payday loan, keep these tips in mind to help you find a legit lender:

  • Make sure they’re licensed. First and foremost, check whether the lender has a payday lending licence in your province. If they don’t, walk away.
  • Check if they’re BBB accredited. Better Business Bureau accreditation can provide added peace of mind that you’re dealing with a reputable company.
  • Know the regulations where you live. Payday lending regulations differ from province to province, so make sure the lender follows all regulations in your area. You can find information on payday lending laws through your local consumer affairs office.
  • Read reviews. Check out what other customers have to say about a lender on sites like Trustpilot and Google.
  • Watch out for warning signs. It’s also important to recognize the signs that a lender may not be legit. For example, if they offer guaranteed loan approval, if they ask you to pay an upfront fee or if they’re not transparent about the cost of the loan, look elsewhere.
