Our verdict
Send funds to 200+ countries with Xe, an international money transfer service and currency conversion platform.
Through XE's extensive network, you'll be able to transfer money to more than 200 countries in more than 100 currencies. And there's only a small fee to pay on transfers below $500 CAD, which you'll be shown upfront. But pay close attention to transfers without a fee and check you're ok with the exchange rate markup as you won't find the mid-market rate being used on any of XE's transfers or its online calculator.
Most of the money transfers are completed in minutes. Occasionally certain factors can affect the transfer completion date. Xe keeps clients updated by email throughout the process.
Pros
-
Good for sending large amounts with zero fees and competitive exchange rates
Cons
-
Look elsewhere if you want to send cash or transfer funds to a mobile wallet

Xe money transfer fees
Xe does not charge any fees or commissions on international money transfers above $500. However, there is a flat fee of CAD $3.00 for transfers of $499.99 or less. There are no account maintenance fees or other ongoing charges.
That being said, you could lose money to fees charged by intermediary banks, or the financial institutions through which funds must pass to reach your recipient’s account. Your recipient’s bank could also charge a fee for incoming transfers.
Xe is not responsible for any fees other than its own, so it can be tough to predict exactly how much will end up in your recipient’s account. The same uncertainty exists when sending money through any other money transfer service or bank. However, the receiving amount quoted by Xe can serve as a fairly good guide.
How does Xe make money?
Although there are no fees for sending an Xe money transfer over $500, Xe still makes money off the exchange rate. Like most money transfer services, Xe takes a fee worth a small percentage of the midmarket rate (the “true” exchange rate between 2 currencies).
The rate you’re quoted before sending a transfer includes this fee, which is why the rate is different to the midmarket rate you’ll see on Google or Reuters.
Xe exchange rates
Xe offers a free currency conversion tool on its website. However, this is designed to show the midmarket exchange rate, not the rate at which you’re funds will be converted if you send an Xe money transfer.
The midmarket rate between a pair of currencies is the amount of one currency you need to equal 1 unit (dollar, peso, euro etc.) of another currency. It does not take into account fees deducted by banks or money transfer services for profit. It might be helpful to think of the midmarket rate as the “true” exchange rate between 2 currencies.
Xe does not offer money transfers at the midmarket rate. Instead, it deducts a fee (called a “margin” or “spread”) worth a small percentage of the midmarket rate. The lower the markup or spread, the lower your fees when converting funds for an international money transfer.
We found Xe’s exchange rate markup for many popular destination countries is often at or under 1%.
