Our verdict

Changelly lets you exchange crypto easily—but you'll need to connect to a third party for fiat-to-crypto transactions.

Changelly lets you exchange crypto through its native platform or buy and sell crypto with fiat through a supported third-party service like MoonPay, Simplex or Banxa. The platform conveniently aggregates rates from third parties, so you can easily compare your options and lock in a good trade.

You'll need a non-custodial wallet to manage your crypto, but Changelly supports plenty of providers, including Trezor, Ledger, Exodus and Zengo. Total fees are difficult to nail down, so if you want clear, predictable pricing, you might want to look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Supports many cryptos & fiat currencies
  • Pay by debit, credit, bank transfer, Apple Pay or Google Pay
  • Volume discounts with a PRO account (fees as low as 0%)
  • No maximum trade limit (a minimum may apply)

Cons

  • Requires a non-custodial crypto wallet
  • Can only buy crypto with fiat via integrated third-party services
  • Not registered with a Canadian securities regulator, unlike some competitors

Using the Changelly app

Changelly offers Android and iOS apps that let you buy, sell and exchange crypto just about anywhere. Millions of people use the Changelly app to trade crypto, view news and data on popular coins and access 24/7 in-app support.

Is Changelly safe?

Changelly is a non-custodial platform that does not store users' deposits. Two-factor authentication is available as an extra layer of account security, and Changelly regularly monitors trading activity for suspicious transactions.

Hacks. As of the time of writing, we couldn't find any records of Changelly being hacked.

Insurance. The company does not have third-party insurance to cover losses from unauthorised account access. To counteract the impact of customer bankruptcies and negative account balances, it maintains an in-house Insurance Fund and uses Auto-Deleveraging (ADL). These measures involve collecting liquidation fees from non-bankrupt traders and using the profits of some traders to offset the losses of others.

Regulation. Changelly isn't registered with the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) or the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Keeping your crypto secure

All centralized exchanges, including Changelly, are vulnerable to counterparty risks like hacking, theft and insolvency. Using a self-custodial or hardware wallet is widely accepted as the best way to improve the security of your funds. We've shared some of our top picks below.
