Do Aeroplan points expire?

Do Aeroplan points expire? Learn more about Aeroplan and find out how to keep your points from expiring.

Do Aeroplan points expire? If you’ve taken a hiatus from collecting Aeroplan points (formerly Aeroplan Miles), you’re likely wondering how long your points will be valid for. Read on to find out more about Aeroplan’s expiry policy and learn what you can do to protect the points you’ve already accumulated.

Do Aeroplan points expire?

The short answer is yes. Though your points are quite flexible, Aeroplan’s policy states that your Aeroplan points will expire if your account has been inactive or idle for 18 consecutive months. That’s why it’s important to regularly earn, redeem, donate or transfer points to keep your account active. However, it’s relatively easy to restart the clock if you’re approaching this point.

What can I do to keep my points from expiring?

Before your Aeroplan points expire, there are a number of actions you can take to keep your account active:

  • Use your Aeroplan credit card. The best way to keep your points active is to use an Aeroplan credit card to pay for purchases.
  • Swipe your Aeroplan membership. If you don’t have a credit card, you can book travel or make a purchase at one of Aeroplan’s partner stores.
  • Shop at Aeroplan’s eStore. You’ll reactivate your points every time you shop at one of more than 120+ online retailers in Aeroplan’s online eStore.
  • Transfer your hotel rewards. You can transfer your loyalty rewards from partner hotels like Marriott to keep your Aeroplan points charged up.
  • Donate your points to charity. It’s possible to donate a portion of your points to charity to keep your account active.
  • Transfer your Aeroplan points to another member. You can also send your points to friends or family if you don’t want to keep your account open.
  • Redeem your points for rewards. If you’re concerned that your points will expire, you can also redeem them quickly and easily for flights, travel and other merchandise. Read our guide on redeeming your Aeroplan points for tips.

How will I know when my points are going to expire?

If you haven’t used your account in a while, you should be notified by Aeroplan before your Aeroplan points expire. You’ll typically be notified by email or mail but you’ll also be able to see warnings whenever you visit Aeroplan’s website.

You can also check when your Aeroplan points expire by logging in to your Aeroplan account. From there, you can select “Overview” from your account settings. Then you just need to scroll down to “Account expiry” to see when your Aeroplan points expire.

My Aeroplan points expired. Now what?

If your Aeroplan points expire, you may have the option to buy them back. With the old Aeroplan program, you could buy back some or all of your points for $0.01 per point plus a small administration fee and applicable taxes. This is likely still the case with the new program, though it’s not explicitly stated on the website.

If you decide that it makes sense to buy back your points, you’ll need to call the Aeroplan contact centre at its toll-free number. An agent will process your payment information on the spot and your Aeroplan points should show up in your account on the same day.

Once your points are reinstated, they’ll function just like any other Aeroplan points. This means you can redeem them for rewards, transfer them to your friends and family or leave them in your account until you need them.

How much are Aeroplan points worth?

While it can be difficult to estimate the true value of your points, many collectors assign an average worth of between 0.5 and 2.5 cents to every Aeroplan Point you earn. That said, it’s important to remember that the value of your points will depend on what rewards you plan to redeem them for.

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll usually get a higher redemption rate for flights and other forms of travel. You’ll earn less if you want to redeem your points for items such as merchandise, gift cards and charitable donations.

Bottom line

If you’re worried about your Aeroplan points expiring, you can take a number of actions to prevent that from happening. Find out more about how to check your Aeroplan expiry dates and keep your Aeroplan account active so that you get the rewards you deserve.
