Our verdict

Huntington Bank has been around for over 100 years and offers a full suite of banking products, from personal checking accounts to business and commercial solutions. It’s best suited for customers who live in one of the 11 states it services. But if you’re after competitive interest rates to help your money grow, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Best for: Those who prefer in-person banking as it’s only available to those who live in one of the 11 states where Huntington National Bank operates.

Pros
  • ATM reimbursements on most accounts
  • No opening deposit on checking accounts
  • Free 3-month line of credit with a checking account
Cons
  • Only available in 11 states
  • Most accounts come with monthly fees
  • Weak interest rates on most products

Is Huntington National Bank right for you?

Huntington National Bank is a good option if you rely on in-person banking and live in one of the 11 states it services:

  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

If you’re a resident in one of these states, you’ll like that some of its checking accounts come with handy features, including ATM reimbursements and credit score and identity monitoring.

But its interest rates are abysmal, and nearly all of its accounts come with a monthly fee, although it may be waivable for qualified customers.

How Huntington National Bank stacks up

Huntington National Bank has over a century’s worth of experience in banking and wealth management. While its geographic footprint is limited to 1,000 branches across 11 states, it offers several competitive accounts worth consideration.

Where it shines

Huntington offers a wide range of banking products with varying account requirements. For example, Huntington’s top checking account offers distinctive features like unlimited ATM withdrawals — even at out-of-network ATMs, free checks, credit score and identity monitoring and a free small safe deposit box.

Its offerings continue to drop off as you move through its mid and base tiers, allowing you to zero in on an account that works for you.

And its standard features, such as a free three-month line of credit, are enough to set it apart from the competition.

Where it falls short

One of the biggest downfalls for Huntington is its interest rates. The Premier Savings account earns a measly 0.01% APY, and its relationship interest rate if you have a qualifying Huntington checking account is only marginally higher at 0.02% APY.

While its Relationship Money Market Account boasts rates starting at 3.97% APY, it only applies to balances over $25,000.

Huntington SmartInvest Money Market Account

Tier 1 customers have at least $100,000 in total Huntington relationship balances and earn the lower rate, and Tier 2 members have at least $1 million and enjoy the higher APY.

But to qualify for this money market account, you must have a Huntington SmartInvest Checking account, which requires a Huntington Investment Advisory Account and at least $100,000 in total qualifying Huntington balances. What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score analyzes hundreds of CDs from more than 100 institutions. It takes into account the product's interest rate for available terms and opening deposit requirements - this gives you a simple score out of 10.

Different banks and credit unions offer CDs for various lengths of time, ranging from as short as seven days to as long as 20 years. For our ratings, we consider the term lengths that the FDIC uses in its monthly updates on national rates.

If a bank or credit union doesn’t offer a CD for a specific term used by the FDIC, we don’t penalize it: Instead, we simply don’t rate it. Each of the standard term lengths has its own APY rating based on the FDIC’s average rates.
