Our verdict

High fees and balance requirements with a few added perks for linked accounts and ATM use.

The Chase Premier Plus Checking offers a few extra perks like fee waivers on linked accounts and limited free non-Chase ATM use, but its $25 monthly fee is high. You can waive the fee with a $15,000 balance, which may be difficult for some. The account is interest-bearing, but it’s a low 0.01% APY. Knowing all that, this account is better suited for those with high balances who want fee waivers on linked Chase accounts and discounts on typical banking services.

Best for: Those who want a premium account from a traditional bank.

Pros

  • ATM rebates
  • Fee waivers on linked accounts
  • Overdraft fee waived for small overdrafts

Cons

  • High monthly fee without $15,000 balance
  • Low APY
  • High wire transfer fees

What we like about the Chase Premier Plus Checking account

The Chase Premier Plus Checking account comes with typical perks you’d find with other Chase checking accounts, such as Chase Overdraft Assist, which lets you avoid overdraft fees if your account goes negative by $50 or less.

Like other Chase accounts, you can access Chase’s robust mobile app, which lets you handle everything from tracking accounts to paying bills and sending money with Zelle.

As a Chase account and the largest bank in the US, you’ll have access to over 4,700 branches and 15,000 ATMs nationwide. This extensive network can make it easy to access in-person support or withdraw cash across the states.

Out-of-network ATM rebates

This account offers four fee-free withdrawals at non-Chase ATMs per statement period for convenience when you’re away from a Chase branch or ATM.

Fee waivers

Having the Premier Plus account lets you waive monthly fees on up to two additional Chase checking accounts and one savings account. This benefit is great for managing family or personal finances while avoiding unnecessary costs.

There are also no fees for money orders and cashier’s checks. These savings can add up for customers who frequently use these services.

Where it falls short

The most obvious downside of this account is the $25 monthly maintenance fee, which may be difficult to waive. You can waive the fee if you maintain at least $15,000 across this account and other linked Chase accounts, have a qualifying Chase first mortgage with automatic payments or you’re a current or veteran service member of the US armed forces.

Additionally, Chase’s extensive branch network can be a major selling point, but it’s less relevant if you primarily use digital banking. While the account offers four fee-free non-Chase ATM withdrawals per month, this limit might not be sufficient for frequent travelers or those who live in areas without a strong Chase ATM presence. After you reach the limit, fees can add up.

Like other Chase checking accounts, this account also comes with high wire transfer fees of up to $50 for outgoing international transfers. If you’re looking for a digital-first experience with fewer fees, more specialized options are available.

Low APY

The Chase Premier Plus Checking account is also advertised as an interest-bearing account, but the APY at 0.01% is not competitive, especially compared to top interest-bearing checking accounts like SoFi® or Axos Bank.

Lastly, despite its higher monthly fee, this account doesn’t offer unique rewards or benefits beyond fee waivers and basic banking features. Customers looking for premium perks like travel rewards or cash back on purchases may find better value in a credit card or another premium account.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches over 300 checking accounts from hundreds of financial institutions. It takes into account the product's monthly fees, overdraft fees, opening deposit, customer support options, ATM network and features — this gives you a simple score out of 10.

To provide a Score, Finder’s banking experts analyze hundreds of checking accounts against what we consider is the best option: no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, a large ATM network of 50,000 or more, additional features outside of typical banking services, and the optional perk of earning interest. Accounts that are nearly free to maintain and use are scored the highest, while accounts with costly fees and few features are scored the lowest.

What do people on Reddit say?

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum balance for Chase Premier Plus checking?

There is no minimum balance requirement to keep the account open. However, to avoid the $25 monthly service fee, you must maintain an average beginning day balance of $15,000 across linked qualifying accounts or have a linked qualifying Chase first mortgage with automatic payments from your Chase account. Current service members and veterans of the US Armed Forces can also waive the fee with qualifying military ID.

What is the difference between checking and checking plus?

Chase Total Checking is a simple option for everyday banking. It requires a $12 monthly fee, which can be waived by $500 in direct deposits or a $1,500 balance.

Chase Premier Plus Checking offers perks like up to four fee-free non-Chase ATM transactions and no fees on two linked Chase checking accounts and one savings account. To waive The Chase Premier Plus’ $25 fee, you need a $15,000 balance across linked accounts or a linked Chase mortgage, which is a more difficult ask compared to Chase Total Checking’s minimum requirement.

Total Checking is easier to manage, while Premier Plus is better for those with higher balances or multiple accounts.
